weird ticking noise
Have a new noise witht the Z now! Noticed it at ZDayZ and seems to be slightly louder now.
Sounds like I have an exhaust leak under the car on the pasenger side. Get under it today and there are absolutely no leaks anywhere. Only place I could not see where the turbo manifolds themselfs. But everything else is tight with no carbon anywhere around any joint. And it builds boost like normal.
Now if I open the hood I can hear a similar sound but it sounds like a valvetrain noise to me when I listen to the different parts of the engine. I can really hear the noise when another car pulls along side of me or when I am in the garage. If I am out driving I can't hear it. Car is running fine, no loss in power, oil level was slightly low (maybe a 1/4 qt), but changed it today and the noise is still there.
I did a search and seems like most people are describing a fuel dampner TSB, but I have a return fuel system, so the dampner is no longer in myh car... I would think if this was a coil pack I would notice other symptoms like missing under boost or something... It is not the injectors either, I can hear those too, this is a seperate noise.
I am pretty sure this is a valvetrain/lifter noise, but why would it sound like it was coming from under the car? especailly on the passenger side? I am not too concerned at this point, but I just don't like having issues like this, never know if it is a sign of things to come if you know what I mean!
I also have a startup timing chain noise issue, but I don't think this noise is related to that one. I could be wrong... at startup it sounds like the timing chain tensioner is not tight on the chain until oil psi builds. This noise is there for a split second and goes away as soon as oil psi registars on the gauge.
So all you engine builders out there... what do you think it is? any suggestions? Like I said the car is running fine, pulls hard as hell! Just sounds like an exhaust leak but some how a valvetrain noise at the same time...

please pray that it's not a rod bearing issue.
how's the sound? a tap, tap, tap or a clack, clack, clack? at first my sounds were more like tap, tap, tap... then i drove progressively thinking it was just minor valvetrain noise as the noise was concentrating right below the throttle body. i couldn't hear much of the noise under the car too. however, it grew worse one day to a clack, clack, clack with squeels like a frying pan rotating on the stove. i took the car in and bam! it was a spun rod bearing.
i suggest getting it checked out asap... because if the noise gets worse, the potential of destroying your engine as a whole will increase. good luck man.

It is definately a valvetrain noise. You can hear it loud and clear if you put a soket extention to your ear and hold it to the valve cover and it is pretty noticable under the intake manifold by the injectors. It kind of sounds like injector noise, but it is seperate for the injectors, not on the same interval, just a milisecond off from the injectors pulsing.
I am starting to wonder if this is all coming from the timing chain housing now... But still trying to figure out why I can hear it from under the car! I mean it sounds exactly like an exhaust leak, but there are no leaks! weird!
Anyone else have any thoughts?

I remember hearing the valvetrain noise (that many others also have), but Im stumped that you can hear something under the car. You have never run the car really low on oil? Id doubt it was a rod bearing, I can vouch that your car runs strong. Good luck, I'll be watching this thread.

I am thinking about changing out all of the timing chain components (chain, tensioner, guides) I spoke with Sharif about this a few weeks ago and he had a similar issue with his motor a while back. I am just wondering if this is all releated to the chain startup noise... It is still stumping me on why I can hear it when another call pulls along side of me!

update...
Well I think this noise has to be coming from the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the head...
Today when I went to lunch I went to start the car, and you guys all know that they don't always start with out pumping the pedal sometimes. Well it did it this time and I noticed some smoke coming up from the cowel area at the back of the hood on the passenger side. So looks like one or a few of the nuts must be loose or missing on the manifold where it bolts to the head, since I could see everywhere else and there were no leaks from the turbo back.
I will have to get it up in the air again tonight and confirm, but that smoke coming up definately leads me to believe I have an exhaust leak on the passenger side... If that is the case that would explain a litle bit of my race with Alberto...

I also have an exhaust leak-only using 2 bolts to support my downpipe. We are both in the same boat if thats the case for you. Regardless rematch next year, both cars will be nastier, you know I'll be ready

Off Topic, but... I am bringing the Meth, so you better! haha
Check out the site and let me know what you think... www.alkycontrol.com
This is one of the only kits designed to run meth only, all of my supra buddies are running this.

glad it was just an exhaust leak. You had us a little worried at ZDAYZ...I heard the noise too.
Yeah, your car is sick man...that was awesome playtime with Alberto.

Well... I am not 100% sure that is what it is, but since I saw that smoke coming from the hood when the car did not start right away I am pretty confident that is what it is. If not looks like I will be pulling a valve cover to see what my lash is.
If it is not exhaust, I will probably curl up in to a ball and cry in the shower holding my teddy bear. lol

It was AWESOME racing you and Jkenefic, so nice to have a car near me. The one race I had with you was the closest anybody has been to me-next year we will have another Forged Performance shootout, hopefully Luie can keep up

wonder why-come i wasn't invited to this shootout? you gals too scared of my whip?!?
now back on topic... do you have access to a stethescope? you can put a piece of metal tubing on one (about 1/4" in diameter...approximately two foot long) and listen around "unreachable" parts for an exhaust leak... hell, you might be able to pick one up at a good parts store... that would be the easiest way to find the exhaust leak if there is one... if you can't find/make one, go by a local mieneke or other muffler shop... i'll wager they have one you can use...

Thats Foucked up!
Screw next year, we need to get together before the summers out. Call it an invitational Dragon meet. Kinda of what Jeremy is trying to set up at the track but have it at the dragon. We can go to that section we went to, to do all the runs, its super safe there.

well I got it on a lift at my friend's shop and I do have an exhaust leak, but that is not the main cause of the ticking noise... It is something in the valvetrain for sure. Trouble is I am not sure if it is lifter noise, or timing chain related... Looks like I am going to be taking it apart to find out. Not to excited about it!
This noise started right after or during my trip down to ZDayZ. I am pretty sure it was not there before, at least I did not notice it before. It got slightly louder after beating on it hard on the dragon. It is not any louder now. It is so hard to pin point the noise, I am hoping it is in the timing cover... We will see.
I would rather fix it now then let it go an have something else result from it. I mean it is not something that it of huge concern right now, but I can hear it. I have to point it out to others for them to pick it up, cause it sounds like normal lifter noise to the average person. I just know that it is not...
Has anyone else had this happen? Any other thoughts as to what this could be? It is not coming from the bottom end I can tell that for sure, so what else could it be?

again, you could use a stethescope to pinpoint where in the motor the noise is coming from... front, top, rear, etc... don't use the metal tube as that's designed to catch the "puffs" of air from an exhaust leak... use the doctor style end... you'd need a whole stethescope for this... outside of that, i've no ideas for ya... too hard to pinpoint noises as you've noticed...
