I agree (saw 205 F last week) but how are they controlled w/o the F-con? It's my understanding that everyone that's tried controlling aftermarket fans has had no luck (except w/ the F-con). I hope I'm wrong on this.

 

We are going to attempt to trigger the relays with the stock ECU wiring. If that doesnt work, one could easily run a seperate fan controller, or just activate the fans with a switch. And yes, with the FCON, we can trigger the fans with an adjustable temp threshold for on/off.

I'll let you guys know how it goes....we'll be trying it later today.

do you have any overheating problems on your car? I just made a 4th gear pull on the street from 3000-7000 and my coolant temps barely moved from 174*F. there was a blip where it went to 176, but then came right back to 174 and held there until I left off the gas.

 

sharif, what are the stock fans? PWM controlled?

 

The wiring diagram isnt very descriptive, but it shows 1 ground, and the 3 power triggers. I assume each trigger is for a different fan speed. The two factory relays are triggered by the IPDM, and sends a single to the fans. It is not PWM for sure...but not exactly how it works...yet.

 

Nice work. Hmmm, I wonder how much benefit this will have on a stroked NA Motor.

 

I don't think I would get it if the use of the car is only one pull here or there you wont see drastic temperature changes, but if the car is driven hard constantly or tracked/autox it will be great to not just keep the temps down and even lower them.

And as mentioned the shroud is a must otherwise you leave a great portion of the radiator without fan flow. Very nice mod specially polished

 

+1. I never had cooling problems when I first started tracking the car. But as my lap times dropped, my temps rose!

 

Looks like you have done some nice work, this will be great for people who want more cooling who drive in stop and go traffic.
Yet, for track use, it is far more effective to make a shroud leading in the coolant heat exhanger (HX)than to put a fan on it. From my calculations your fans are about equal to 10mph of speed of air through the HX. When you are driving on a road coarse your speed are almost always in excess of 50mph, so the car moving under high speeds will all be able to move more air through the HX than a fan will.
I am not saying the fans are not needed for track, as they are very usefull when coming into the pits or the paddock, just saying you won't see any benifit on track with them.

 

It would be great to see some sort of V mount config for the Z. That could solve alot of cooling issues especially for track use.

The twin Spals resulted in a 10 C drop in temps while cruising on the freeway. Our Dyno fan generates much more than 10mph of airflow...so the fans must be doing something. I will report back after testing at Road Atlanta.

But your additional suggestions are definately valid.

 

Ok, we figured how the fan wiring works, if anyone is interested.

There are 4 wires going to each fan. Ground, and three power wires.
As each speed of the fan kicks in, 12V is applied in succession to those 3 power wires. So the fan motor must have three windings in it, and at each speed, you get an additional 12V. Based on this, it should be very easy to use a standard 30amp 4 prong relay to activate the fans with the stock ECU in control.

We're about to try it...will post again shortly.

Your post indicated 2540 cfm/pair of fans. A Koyo radiator is 15 3/4" x 28 3/8", rounding off to 15" x 28" is 420 sq. in. or 2.92 sq. ft. So 2540 cfm/2.92 sq ft is 869.9 ft/min or 9.9 mph. This is an average velocity over the face of the radiator, and I am sure you have much higher velocities over a localized area.

 

HKS makes a separate fan controller as well as an option...

 

Theory and practical results are oftentimes two different things. If the fans suck at Road Atlanta, I will say so. Jose's NA car runs a consistent 220F when he is running 9/10-10/10ths. We'll see how it goes with the fans.
