Default Blown Turbo :(

Hey Guys,

I am posting here because i need advice. I bought a turbo kit off my friend that only used it for 3,000-4,000 Miles. I've been driving with the turbo kit on my car for about a month now. It started to make sounds about a week ago so i took it back to the shop and they checked it but it was just because the Turbo & Downpipe was close so to the body. Well this is where are the headache comes in. I have the APS Single Turbo Kit for the G35 Coupe. I was driving home last night and all of the sudden the car was making weird grinding sound. So i thought nothing of it but while i was driving home the noise was constant. Let me remind you i was not boosting at all on the way home. At about 3,000 RPM, thats where you could hear the grinding sound the loudest, so i got off the gas and just stayed @ 2,000 RPM just cruising home. I went to bed thinking that the sound would go away. Today morning i start the car and drive to work and the sound got to a point where i needed to get it checked so i went back to the place where i got the kit installed and they checked and they said the Turbo is BLOWN !! , They said everything was fine when they were done installing the kit there was oil going through so it couldn't have been oil starvation. But now i do not know what else could have caused this. So my question to everyone else is, what can I do? I want to rebuild the turbo but everyone is telling me different stories about you can or cannot. Has anyone with APS ST blown there turbo if you did what did you guys do? Sharif from Forged Performance helped me as much as he could *thanks*. But I just need more advice. Warranty is gone so everything will be coming out of my pocket. Thank you for reading my post.

P.S. My Gauges were reading fine. And i did not see any white smoke or anything.

Car: 2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe
FI: APS Single Turbo Kit

turbochargers.com cost too much and not many people happy with their rebuilt quality, i suggest you go to forcedperformance.com 400 for a basic rebuilt can't beat that .

I blew two turbos since my original install. I looked into rebuilds but ended up buying new after hearing "no guarantee" from the rebuild shop. Really expensive route to take though. I feel your pain ... good luck in getting it worked out.

Companies are telling me that the Turbo the comes in the Single Turbo Kit is a Garrett GT35R Hybrid, What does that mean ? And is it really a GT 35R?

When my APS ST impeller broke as a result of a front-end collision, I ended up having to purchase a new GT35R cartridge and installing it myself while watching South Park one night...

New cartridge costs about $990, plus you'll need a hefty pair of c-ring pliers to undo the compressor housings from the cartridge.

That said, if you had a a shaft imbalance that may have scored the housing, then you may need that cleaned up a bit before install.

EDIT: And yes, it uses a standard GT35R cartridge. The entire turbo is a hybrid as it uses bastard housings, but the cartridge is a std. cartridge.

Good luck.

JoeDirt,

Thanks for the help man. I guess i got my question answered . Now it is time to buy a new cartridge. How come the turbo looks so small for a GT35R. I thought they were way bigger.

You can rebuild Ball Bearing Turbo's from my understanding. You just need to buy the new cartridge like what JoeDirt did. Its about $1,000 for the GT 35R Cartridge. A new GT35R is like $1,300

DJames ... I have the Greddy TT kit. The turbo I bought is a TD05 - 18G. The cost was $1,400+ each.
