Default My defi BF gauges... dont work!!!

Sorry for this repost, I posted in the audio video but I need an answer hopefully by the morning(wednesday) as im trying to get to the tuner and i really want to monitor my gauges incase I get a leak.. that would not be good.

Thanks for the help here is the situation:

I have the defi control link II with 3 gauges (boost/oil temp/oil pressure). I have all 4 wires powered up, the 12v battery, 12v ignition, ground and 12v small lamp (turns on with lights). Now when the ignition is in, the defi control unit turns on and the led's blink (upon first turn-on it has a constant beep for ~10sec). If i turn on the lights the control unit powers on solidly. At no time can i get the gauges to turn on, either in meter 1 output or meter 2 output.

Oh yea, I am no electrical whiz by any means, so my buddy did the wiring for me. This is most likely a very stupid question.. so dont laugh at me please. I noticed in the defi manual, it says to connect to the negative terminal on the battery... isnt that the same as just grounding it to the body, or does it actually need to be connected to the negative?

thanks for any input!
Aaron

Ground shouldn't matter as long as it's chassis.

Do the gauges sweep on start up?

Meter output 2 is the one that needs to be pluged into. Do you have the power cable connected to the unit?

No the gauges dont sweep up, meter 2 instead of meter 1? I have the dc cable plugged into the control unit and then wired into my car. Im guessing the wiring must be wrong. I have noticed that when I let off the gas, the control unit beeps, I unplugged the oil pressure sensor and it stops.

If it beeps when you let off the gas than the sensor is working and that's the warning alarm.

so yeah the gauges are getting signal, but their not powering up, no sweep or anything. why would the control unit get power and not send it to gauges ? does it have something to do with the illumination wire?

Your wiring is incorrect. Slap your friend.

Keep in mind Defi's need TWO sources of power.
One Constant 12v as well as a ignition 12v source (in other words, a "signal" that tells the gauge to turn on when the key is turned to ACC). Easiest way to do so is splice it with your stereo wiring harness since the gauges will probably sit close to the center console or cubby. Check factory service manuals for the wiring diagrams. After you correct the wiring, and still nothing works, check all the fuses.
Good luck

LOL well he went thru everything with a volt meter and he swears its wired right, he knows his stuff. Probably will rewire everything tommorow. He actually didnt use the stereo harness and used some harness (maybe ecu?) I think on the RHS under the glove box perhaps there arent all the wires required there.

If everything was wired right, your gauges would be working.
Don't let the fancy looking box with the cool moving needles and digital numbers fool you into thinking he's some kind of electric whiz.

Its funny, because when u actually get the gauges to work, they still wont read correctly. defi is the biggest BS ricer gauge manufacturer. its shocking at how inaccurate they are.

Update - So this is what I have:

Red - Looking for a 12v constant, was plugged into the rear defroster which hopefully is the reason they didnt work.

Orange wire is into passenger side ciggarette lighter (which is where my wideband and evc are plugged into and they work fine)

Black - Same ground as others

White - Was plugged into glovebox bulb but currently is unhooked for testing

It works! There are actually two blue/white wires on on the ignition harness.. I didnt see the thicker one which is actually the 12v constant.

Sweet.

There should be a 'use my brain' button right next to the 'new thread' button. life would be grand then.
