Unhappy AC went out today

Well it finally happened, I was on the highway when I notice in the rearview a bunch of white smoke/vapor coming out from behind the car. I thought oh sh*t my turbo is cooked, but it suddenly stopped, and that's when my AC went hot It couldn't have happened during a hotter heatwave I'm too tired right now to jack up the car and see what happened, but I'm hoping it's the replacement AC hose that TN supplies with the kit because I have a spare (thanks chimmike ) I have my doubts it's that hose though...

I thought 98intrigue is part of your shop or at least connected.

every time anyone mentions anything about AC in a new thread title, I don't even have to open it up and read it. It always ends up being something caused by the TN kit

It's a quick fix Diwun, don't worry. GT Motorsports is wrapping all my vital hoses and wires with a special 'fire hose wrap'. You should look into the same kind of thing. In addition, I have been told there are options as far as routing certain hoses and wires away from heat sources that also help.

Im still part of the TN no A/C club. I even put heat wrap over the new line and other places it just didnt last. If I would have needed to bang that AC line out of the way anymore it would be in 3 pieces--oh well, good thing I dont usually use my A/C...

mine went out TODAY too... for the second time.. i guess ima take this time to just take the turbo off and send it out to get rebuilt... (i pass oil)

any suggestions, the kit i bought was used so its out of warrantee... how much would it be to send this turbo out to turbonetics and get it serviced?

They have a program in which you send in your old unit and they rebuild it with the capability to accept water lines for cooling the bearing area down.

This is free of charge except for the lines which you have to pay for.

Yeah, no biggie though. I'm driving to Ft. Lauderdale next friday, if I don't fix it by then, the 3hr drive is gonna SUCK with no AC I may rent a car...

BTW I have almost 6K daily driven miles on with the kit

Are these upper or lower a/c lines that are burning.

It's all about how it's installed. The reason so many are burning through is the amount of piping and hot components in close proximity on the driver's side of the motor. The heat shielding that comes with the kit is not enough. Anyone who doesn't go to greater measures to sheild the line is asking for a blow out.

Look at my "testing waters" thread or the one andy just wrote up to see how to go about making sure it doesn't happen.

For shielding, I would look into:
DEI heat sheath + DEI Cool Tube Extreme for the lower line

DEI Fire Sleeve for the upper line.

Be VERY careful with the routing. Spend extra time to make sure it will never directly contact hot piping (same for the oil return line). I'd recommend using one of the above methods to shield the oil return as well.

My AC lines have been shielded in the above manner and I don't expect I will have another issue with lines blowing.
