Default Need advice on new auto tranny!

I figure this would be the best place to ask this question since no one has needed to replace a 5AT tranny that's not FI (to my knowledge)

My tranny recently gave out so I need to make a decision on how to go forward. I have a build motor with twins, and I would like to utilize all the potential power.

Also, I will add a tranny cooler and temp gauge.

Please put down your opinion and why. Thanks!

those that chose TH400, could you please give some feedback on daily driveability and gas mileage if you have one? Who actually has a TH400 so I can get some opinions? Thanks.

I know some one runs the Th400 , but I think its in a car built for the strip . I would find out who it is and ask them on the drivability of it

If it's a DD then rebuild your 5AT. If it's purely a strip car then you can go the TH400 route.

I'm not sure if GTM or SGP can repair a heavily damaged transmission or if their upgrades require a 5AT in good working order. I'd contact one or both those shops and get some advice. I doubt many people are going to have the experience to guide you with this poll.

My point exactly...after this winter, the car will be mostly a weekend car and not a DD anymore, but I still think a th400 will be too much. Decisions, decisions...

I know exactly what you mean...it was worth a shot...that's exactly why I put "buy a used tranny from a junkyard" as one of the options...I don't know if it's worth it to try to repair and build my current tranny...I think it would be better if I started fresh, so to speak.

I found some 03 trannies with 20k miles or so for 1,200 a while ago when I was just looking around. If anyone can guide me as to where I could get one for a better price, I'd appreciate it

most TH400, and Th350's are three speeds unless you shell out big bucks for a 4sp w/ overdrive. Daily driving is pretty much out of the question.

Someone needs to figure out how to adapt the GM/ford t-56 6spd to the VQ and hell, i'll keep my Z. The creator of this kit will be a rich man (or woman )

4l60 runs into the same problem as the tranny in the Z's 450-500whp they start having trouble. Why not check out GTM's new auto tranny? ...or get your hands on the 6l80 that is in the new corvettes so you still have your manual mode and paddle shifters.

FWIW, I purchased a blown tranny from a local Z owner for a couple hundred $$. SGP rebuilt it and it's now holding 500+whp with no problems....... and with paddle shifters.

They are going to replace most if not all of the clutches, bands, etc. on a full rebuild.

the new performance rebuilds are much stronger than that....besides he's only making 400.check the back of national dragster for a couple builders.
