I mention this beacause ATI used to use smaller idler pullies on some of thier mustang kits; the bearings would end up failing.
What would you recommend?

That is incorrect because you are disregarding the internal step up with in the blower. It may be going twice the speed of the input pulley but not the blower speed.

No, I was talking about the driven pulley on the blower, not the impeller speed.

the idler appears to be about 1.5" while the driven pulley is about 3"......hence the idler will be spinning at 2X the blower pulley speed.

With all the side loading of that idler pulley and the high speed, that bearing will be under alot of stress. Hopefully, GTM took that into account when selecting the bearings for that pulley.

If the bearing is up to the task of handling the speed and side loading due to the belt tension, then it won't be a problem. It is just something to watch for. A larger pulley would spin slower.

Eye balling the frictional increase it appears to be about 22%. 220 deg vs 180 deg. Well worth the minor cost and effort...

No matter what pulley you run the idler will always spin the same speed since there is no step up. The bearings in the idler are supplied by the manufacturer that makes the idler (which GTM buys and puts in their kit) and is designed for high speeds and high side loads.

928 Motorsports uses the same idlers on their Ferrari kit which has a larger crank pulley diameter then the Z and a 7500rpm limit and the idler has held up with no problems.

Nice!! what measurements were used for the drilled hole location on the bracket.

right.....the idler pulley speed is related to its size versus the crank pulley diameter. Like I said before, hopefully this bearing is up to the task and there is nothing to worry about.....

I don't have exact measurments, I eyeballed it... The top of the pulley is just barely over the top of the SC bracket (it almost sits flush) and I have it about 1/4" away from the 3.12 pulley.

You just have to be watchfull for the TC cover since there is a piece that sticks out a bit and you do not want the belt to rub it.

I held the pulley in place with one hand and routed the belt with the other to make sure all clearances were OK before I marked and drilled my spot... Make very sure you have good clearances before you drill, you only have one shot at it.

So far so good... I drove it fairly hard last night and put about 100 miles on it. The pulley gets pretty warm but so far no bearing noises at all... The bearing noise that the Vortech is famous for actually went away as well.

I am keeping an extra belt in the car just in case and will share any positive or negative results I get as far as belt / bearing wear.

when the bearing failed, it would sezie up, but the belt was still forcing the pulley to spin. The pulley would turn red hot, and either shear the pulley right off it mount and/or the belt would start to cook!
It looks like the same pulley that Vortech is using for their Rev-Up's, so I am sure it is up to the task.

After one full month with the GTM pulley installed everything is still A-OK! She is running like a bat outta he!! and the belt looks great still. No noises or vibrations at all and the blower is still quieter than it was prior. I really like this MOD!

Thanks GTM!

The non-revup Vortech kits now ship with a new pulley layout. I believe the mounting plate is the same, they just replace 2 pulleys with one. I think people should also check into this option as you would not have to drill into the mounting plate.

went to Sam today and had him install the pulley mod for me too. Turned out great! I no longer get that annoying squeel with my belt tensioner maxed out..and getting a nice 9 psi =)

This is true. I have the new non-revup belt setup and it is less cluttered then the old and no belt slip yet!
