when is building the upper end necessary
if you have the money then when your building the bottem end you might as well get cams and **** while its open.... it will save you money and you can make more power on less boost
Since nobody agrees on what exactly 500 or 600whp is...this is a tough question to answer.
What dyno?
500whp on our dyno....no problem with stock heads...which would be about 550whp on a dyno jet. After that, cams and head work work really help the engine sing much better.

We made 780whp on stock heads/cams with no problems, but the motor would definitely have benefited from cams and headwork. Even a stock motor would benefit from heads+cams, but I would recommend it once getting into the 500...600+ range as you will see some nice results. If you are building the motor, that is definitely the best time to do your headwork imo becase tearing the heads off later isn't so fun.... exhaust manifolds have to come off, front end must be torn down to remove the timing covers, chains, etc.
We have some nice head packages if you are looking to go down that road. PM me or give us a call if interested.
Cams are a huge plus when building a motor for power. I haven't seen any definitive reason to upgrade the valvetrain or port/polish the heads unless you're going for 800+whp. But, it definitely won't hurt...
my goals are for making the most power I can only on pump gas. therefore, I'll need a very efficient head, port, cam package that'll allow me to make more power at lower boost levels. Hopefully, it works!
