Default APS TT replacement and upgrade info....

Most of you know I went through a recent rebuild of the APS turbos w/ success due to smoking issues I was having...and I recently came across this info at atp turbo as to options for replacements...I've been searching the forums for some time as too the exact nomenclature for the these and other members are correct when they said that they are 2535R's but later renamed to 2871R. In response to a number of PM's I've recieved about whats involved because of similar issues they're having...I did some more digging and ATP came back w/ this....

" HKS called them GT2535's but they are GT2871R units with a small trim.

We have the original CHRA's available a direct replacements.

We also have a larger trim GT2871R that will flow a lot more on the
compressor side and theat is the stageI upgrade.

We also have a larger overall GT3071R unit that can be the stage II level
upgrade that will increase flow on the turbine (hot) side as well.

All 3 options we quoted are for 100% drop-in fitment. "

...I hope this information is helpfull down the road for some people.

We sent out a set a while back.To upgrade the current housings and upgrade we were quoted over $2800 per set. I was more cost effective to simply purchase new turbos from them.

everyplace I imagine has there own pricing.. I would contact them directly for an updated price...from what i understood from this place..it varied from 850 to 1300 per turbo...I believe though the later option...the 3071R might be slightly in-efficient and take longer to spool.

Good info, thanks for posting this Crom. I like the current APS turbos and I would not want to upgrade to a bigger size, so knowing what is a direct (exact) replacement is very helpful.

Thanks

Had mine upgraded to the GT2871R a few months back. Cost was 2400 for the set.

What is the size of the original APS Turbo's A/R? I see 5 options on the ATP website under GT2871R (http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=GRT)

.63, .64, .82, .86, and a tiny one .48

You mean the APS turbos are smaller? Are they GT2860R's then? GT2860R and GT2871R have the same sized housings . . . .

Stock APS are smaller but not sure what size they are, my seals were gone so we went with the bigger cartridges.

I would highly not recommend the 2871R. Garrett mechanics informed me that there are few cons to those turbos. Even though they have exact physical dimensions of the 3071s, Garrett removed one blade from turbine side, to achieve the smaller turbos. That means that energy from exhaust gasses are lost due to turbos efficiency. The 3071s are little bit lugier, but due to large capacity of our engine this is not noticeable. I have superimposed our engine data to the map of the compressor. Theese turbos can take you up from 400 to 900bhp without leaving the midle island of maximum efficiency. I am currently making this modification, but I am facing problems due to physical constraints of the car's engine bay. I am on a business trip and I will conclude the modification when I will be back.
If you want to find out the turbos size, theese are the figures The compressor housing is coming from a 2554R modified to include the compressor wheel of the 2861R. Thus APS is calling them custom aerodynamic. They are refering to this modification. The turbine housing is a standard T25 with a 2861R turbine wheel

Our turbos are not 2871R. The compressor is 0.8 A/R. This is not a direct replacement. Look at the compresor outlet. On APS turbos are flanged. APS housing is coming from the smaller turbos 2554R.

OK let me get this straight then.

APS Standard Turbos:

Compressor - GT2554R Housing w/GT2861R Compressor Wheel

Turbine - T25 Housing w/GT2861R Turbine

I didn't know Garrett made a GT2861R, I thought there was only the GT2860R series. Maybe a typo? If not, then I'm assuming the only difference is the A/R between the 60R and 61R.

So . . . what is the difference between the APS Turbo and a regular GT2560R. After reading through this thread like 12 times and looking back and forth between the differences of the GT2554R vs. GT2560R, it seems that APS just used two GT2560R's. Kinda lame . . ..

So if my Turbos went bad, all I do is buy two GT2560R's.

Here is what I came up with.

GT2554:
Turbine
-Wheel: 53mm w/ 62 trim
-Housing: .64 ar

Compressor
-Wheel: 54.3mm w/ 60 trim
-Housing: .80 ar

GT2560R:

Turbine
-Wheel: 53mm w/ 62 trim
-Housing: .64 ar

Compressor
-Wheel: 60mm w/ 60 trim
-Housing: .60 ar

As such:

The Turbines on both those turbos are the exact same. The only difference is the Compressor.

So according to your information, APS is using a .80 A/R Compressor Housing with a 60mm w/ 60 trim Wheel.

Am I correct?

Yes They machined the compressor housing to accommodate the larger compressor wheel. They did that for space purposes and better compressor responce
