I don't know why no one has asked this question but I am in a pickle here. I have a utec ready to go in my vortech SCed g35 BUT uprev by osiris came out and Shawn from Church auto suggested I use the uprev. Since I will be tuning my car at church, I am leaning towards the UpRev but then again I haven't had much feedback ab out uprev and vortech. What are you guys's suggestions? Sell the utec and go uprev OR keep the utec and go tune my car at GTM with Sam?

 

If you already have the UTEC, I would certainly keep that.

tough call since there's not been much feedback on boosted cars running off a UpRev reflash... i think i would lean towards uprev, particularly if you live close by to an authorized tuner.

 

The UTEC has added features that the uprev cannot do. Suchas nitrous control, tps, window switch, etc. Wide band capable (good for older Zs - newer ones have a wide band), data logging capable, etc.

 

Stick with the utec you wont regret it.

 

I live about 15 min from a uprev dealer (Church auto) but I live about an hour from where I would install UTEC. If i ever ran into troubles, I think torrance is hell of a lot closer than the rancho cucamunga for those who know the region.

I don't need nitrous compatibility for I would never run nitrous. I would probably tune it once and then leave it at that and never retune my car because I will never have enough money to build my motor.

This is such a hard decision. anyone have experience with uprev? PLEASE HELP

 

I have uprev, well the beta software and i tune my car with it. It works damn good. Much better than a utec. I have had both.

 

I have the uprev flash on my n20 Z and it has been flawless so far (knock on wood). BUT you said GTM would tune the utec; its hard to beat a utec tune from any of the well known vendors (PF, GTM, FP, MRC...), GTM in your case. Not saying Shawn isnt capable of a great tune, I have heard nothing but great things from him work.

I think it would be cheaper to go utec, since you have it already, so thats what I would do if I were in your shoes. (But the osiris software is awesome, especially with the updates that they are expecting to release as they improve on the software.)

How about the F-Con iS and have it tuned by Sam@GTM?

 

I don't choose to spend that much money when my HP goals are only in the 400WHP area.

As for those who suggested Uprev, could you please state why? Same goes for UTEC people, I'm just weighing my possibilities here, thanks a bunch

I'm in the same boat as you except for I'm not FI yet. Almost all of the FI packages offered want to stick you with UTEC which is understandable.

I will have to wait til January/February when UpRev releases their latest Osiris update and go from there.

 

A reflash cost a lot of money. Editing values on the UTEC is free.

 

I thought Shawn said retunes are free (within consideration).

Plus Osiris will be end user tunable so you can do it yourself.

 

For a boosted motor:

Resolution is better (but not great) with the UTEC since you get the stock ECU control at low load and the additional data points at higher load w/ the UTEC.

UpRev can adjust cam timing, UTEC cannot.

UTEC can run off MAP, UpRev will require upgraded MAF.

Driveability with the UTEC can be inconsistent when not at WOT.

Compensation for temperature and altitude has been an issue with the UTEC so if you live in Colorado, I'd strongly favor the robustness of the stock ECU.

UTEC has some extra "triggers" and boost solenoid control - but nothing that cannot be compensated for by an EBC.

In the end, I'd go with what your trusted tuner recommends cause he's the one that's gonna have to back up his work.

EDIT: If I personally was making this decision (UTEC vs UpRev), I'd go with the UpRev tune with an electronic boost controller. I have been impressed by UpRev customer service and software. Haltech or FCON are both far superior so if you can spring for one of those, then it's a no-brainer.

 

UTEC for Overboost Fuel Cut and the added MAP Sensor, MAF is yesterday.

P.S: i know its a tough choice but you already got the UTEC man think of it.

 

What about for higher boost situations? ~15+psi and ~550whp.

I have seen a number of UTEC cars who make well over 550whp but there seems to be a lot of people who think the UTEC is a bad choice for higher power situations.

The reason I ask is that I have a UTEC right now but am building my motor soon. I would like to avoid spending another $2500 right now if possible. Down the road I will change but the build is costing me a lot as-is.

We have been running both UTEC and UpRev on a stock block RevUP 2006 Vortech with the 3.12 pulley with NO EMS problems. For all of the reasons rccdash stated above, the UpRev flash gives us excellent control for non-boosted operation and the UTEC takes over when under boost.

The key thing is the tune. Mark at SGP did the tweaking of both the UpRev and the UTEC so that they work together for seamless running of the engine and maintaining a consistent Air-Fuel ratio that does not try to 'learn around' the UTEC.

If you got the money, go with both.
