Ok guys hopefully i would not get flamed to bad. Im not trying to start a auto vs manual war either but this got me thinking. If you were on a rolling start not a dig because i know that the manual would have an advantage on launching unless the auto had a torque converter and a stall.
Okay so you racing from a roll with 2 350z with forced induction one manual and the other auto. we will say for kicks that Both cars put down 400 rwhp and almost the same torque down on the same dyno.
Which car would have an advantage or will they be even because they put down the same amount of hp to the wheels. I would think the auto because it has no lag inbetween gears please discuss im interested, thanks!

Yeah, the roll in speed would matter a ton. For instance, and I know these numbers won't make sense, but let's say you launch at 30 MPH. This could be the high RPM range for 1st gear on the Auto and the low RPM range in 2nd gear on the manual. Perhaps if you launched at another speed it would be flipped. Since the gearing is different, the launch speed will put the cars in different rpm ranges and possibly different gears. Also, even if same gears, one might need to shift right away and the other won't shift for a while.
In theory, an auto that is built properly will shift faster than any human can. on the other hand, a stock auto tranny in the Z is good, but not terrific. If it is a stock auto tranny, I'd give the edge to a good driver in a manual. If it is a built or modified auto tranny done correctly, then I'd give the edge to a good driver in an auto.

Once again, the theory is that the auto can shift faster and when built/tuned properly keep your rpm range right where you want it the entire time.
This is nearly impossible to test in reality, but I think everyone can agree that in theory that auto can shift faster and maintain peak hp ranges longer than any driver could achieve in a manual.
Without a built transmission (assuming completely stock AT), however, the manual should be faster under the given conditions. A good driver with a manual can improve the shifting quite a bit over an amateur. The auto driver can only do so much, since the time and the RPMs are controlled by the computer primarily. The shifting is good, but not great stock. Also, having owned both a manual Z and an auto Z, I can tell you the race would be VERY close.

I couldn't resist as I came across this old thread while researching my new TC. I don't think I actually raced Jamez.
I gotta take this setup out to the 1/4 mile and get some #s before the swap. I have a feeling even though I'll put more to the ground, I'll increase my ET.
