Hmmm. I am about to replace my dif because the pinion is worn out. I have the ATS LSD and I'm replacing the pumpkin due to whine. I am RELIGIOUS about all the fluids on my car. However at one point in time the car sat for many many months so I thought that might have been what caused all the whining. I guess my question is once I replace my manual dif with the 3.3 auto, so long as I keep up the ~2,500 mi fluid change... will I get rid of this miserable whining? Or is it going to be back in 5k miles? I'd like to hear my exhaust again....

I haven't heard of any one claiming "whine free" operation for street use.
If you don't wanna deal with is again for 10s of ks of miles, I'd recommend a Cusco RS or Quaife. Also you "can't" use 3.3 gears in the ATS anyway,s o that makes your choice simpler.

As for fluid there are a few that were deemed acceptable by ATS/Carbonetics for their diffs. Here is an excerpt from an email I got when I asked

"There are other oils which ATS found acceptable. BP 9140S 80w-140 and New Tech UW76 75w-140." Problem is I don't think either is carried in the US.

I've asked them about Motul, and they said they had no data on it so could not say. I didn't ask about Redline, since we don't carry it.

When I asked about the wrong oil being used, they said this:

"Basically if an oil does not fit, it usually is aggresive and causes more particles generated from both carbon chips and metal plates. As the time goes by, those particles are accumulated and changes the backlush. Then you will have a strange noise in the differential section and have to change the fianl gear and pinion. "

They also recommended a diff cooler for those doing lots of track days, but this is recommended even on a stock viscous (those who have done a hard track day on r compounds on even a stock VLSD know what I mean....the stock diff likes to burp at the track, and make a mess!)

Remember, the LSD is a direct replacement, but it's not a matter of old diff out, new diff in. You still have to measure backlash to the pinion gear. Failure to set the right backlash can easily lead to a very harsh whine within only a couple thousand miles, and no oil change is going to fix it unfortunatley. The whine comes as a result of the edges of the pinion becoming rounded off

So your saying that my whine might be a cuase of improper install?? My whine came in around 1500miles?? The hit keep on coming??

Well I finally got my whine after 16k miles - after not doing a fluid change in 6k miles instead of every 2-3k. Jeez. I still have 3.3 ring - maybe it's time to find a Quaife and put that back in. How's the availability of the Quaife for the 5AT these days - anyone know?

You could always drop the pumpkin yourself, and ship it to us. The Q is readily available. Or better yet, we can locate a core, and do the install here, and just ship you the pumpkin for you to swap yourself.

ATS has an LSD which fit 3.36 final gear (3.36 Nissan final used for V35 5 speed automatic).
