The biggest determining factor is if you have solid motor mounts or not. Luie did and we had to drop the transmission on his car to get to the top so I could install the shims and remove the OEM shift arm. He did not have a greddy kit so it took about 4-5 hours total install time. Greddy kit would mean taking off the wastegates... so add another 2 hours for that.

You are supposed to be able to install this by just unbolting the tranny mounts and let the engine sag down. This should shave 2 hours off the install time by not having to drop the transmission.

Then it just depends on where you want to mount the shift indicator. We put Luie's in the gauge cluster, that took about 1.5 hours to fit it in there.

So... it could take as little as 3 hours up to 8 hours depending on what parts you already have installed on the car.

Jkenefic:

I thought you had also opened up the transmission to adjust some things to make it shift smoother and work properly. this comes from a different thread where I thought this was mentioned.

do you not need to open up the transmission?

There are some springs and shims that get changed/added to the tranny as well as a shift lock out that gets removed... So yes you do need to open up the tranny, but not like you would think. just some access covers and bolts.
All of that is included in the kit and is detailed in the instructions.

Very cool mod. Just curious though, after this conversion, can you upshift without using clutch? On some of the Ikeya video they showed them upshift without touching the clutch at all. Is that possible for the Z's transmission?

You can do it, but I would not recommend that if you want you syncros to last.

Those Ikeya cars are running dog boxes that are not using the clutch. I am working with PPG gears for a gearset that will swap into our transmissions but the cost is quite high unless we can get a run of 20 or more.

Worthless with the clutch setup. i was interested in this at the begining, but sincethen... looks the same thing as the origional 6sp. $1600 worth a new tranny..

Nice vid

Good Luck

I always wondered how you downshifted with a dog box. upshifts need to be done at full throttle application, right? so part throttle downshifts or what? rev matching is probably necessary.

Thanks for your input, and your right $1600 can buy you and nice used tranny. If only Dog gears were a more affordable??

I also looked into the PPG gearboxes and they are pretty expensive. It will cost a little fortune for a good gearbox that can hold all the power you throw at it. Now going to build mine, dogbox. Still a bit affordable.

Seriously... Get some sub belts, tighten them after you tighten your lap belt, THEN tighten your shoulder belts. You are going to slip out the bottom of that harness with how high you wear that lap belt.
