Default fun experience on fresh rebuilt turbo

well, i had one of the first gen greddy kits that were known for the famous 3-5 cylinder crack. when i had the car apart this last time for paint and refreshening of the motor, i took the exhaust manifold to a place and get it repaired. the weld looked great, and they resurfaced the thing for $100. pretty good deal then i thought. i rebuilt the turbos at that time also, even though they were still nearly perfect.
fast forward to getting the car together and putting a few miles on it and everything was grand! first dyno session went without a hiccup. second dyno session, one pull where it spin the tires violently, then next pass car would not make boost at all. drove fine, no noise, just no boost.
fast forward again till about an hour ago after finally pulling the pass. side turbo out. obviously, they left some metal drips inside of the manifold casting, and the rush of air from blasting the tires on the dyno broke them off!!! pissed, ya. gunna go back to the guys that welded it? yes also!!

i made this post to just give folks a heads up on just one more thing to take caution with, and also to see if anyone has a shaft i can buy!!! luckily, it was not as bad as it could have been, but sucks none-the-less! pm me if you have one.

the little dudes next to the turbo is what dropped out of it.

Ouch. Curious how many miles did your turbos have?

had about 15 dyno pulls on them and about 400 miles. the second dyno session, first run, he said the tires were a little wet and it violently spun the tires. i was not there so i don't know if it made any noise or it got masked by the dyno slowing down. he said next run, it wouldn't make boost.
i do remember though for the first dyno session the wastegate on the same side got held open, but passed it off as possible carbon build up and momentarily held it open till the next run that freed it up. in hindsight, another chunk of weld is what held it open, then when wg opened on next run, it passed it.

took it back to my shop, pulled the intake sides off first, and both sides spun just like they should and were not held up and no noise even when the shafts were cocked and spun. thought turning them by hand i had freed that one up and it would spin fine again.
started the car up, reved it up to 5-6k range many times and playing with the haltech. next day fired it up and anything over 2500rpm and a clanking sound was heard. turbo is out now, and the pics say the rest.

as most know, pulling just the turbo on the greddy kit makes you want to punch your own groin!! just want to fix it and be done with it finally. this single problem due to my busy schedule has drug out over 2 months.

sorry OT but I was searching for the thread where someone asked who was selling their FI Z. No success and have a friend looking to buy a Z and want him to consider some of the top end cars we have here already done. Thanks!

ya, that is abit ot, lol. mine has been up for sale for a little while. ofcourse, this little issue will be fixed before i let it leave my hands and will be in perfect driving and looking shape. only 400 miles since complete, motor, body, and most mechanical teardown and inspection. new complete color change paint job.
this little turbo issue is kind of a freak deal and will start calling tomorrow morning for a new turbine shaft. nothing else was damaged.

So are you pulling the manifold off? There may be more slag inside that could do it again.

yes, manifold is off too. took all of it down to the guys that did the repair this morn. just went in calmly and showed them what happened, and asked for their help in fixing the turbo and they said they would help. they realizedit as their fault and were stand up about it. i will see if it follows through.

anyone know if the greddy turbine wheel/shaft is just a standard td05, of did greddy do anything custom to the fins? who has replaced one, need the info to order one.

i did the rebuild on them. if you use the same wheels and shaft and mark EXACT location of even the nut, you do not need to rebalance. so about $100 in parts for each one and an hour and your done, pretty simple really.
nothing wrong at all happened mechanically with the turbos to cause it, it was the slag that broke of and tried to pass through the turbo that did the damage. bearings, seals, turbine housing is all still in perfect condition, but need a new turbine wheel/shaft, and with that, then i will have to rebalance.
been calling around the country today for info. most want to rebuild it, and charge $600 for the basic rebuild, and not including the price of the shaft of approx $200. sorry, not paying someone $800 to do a $50 balance, and literally 30 minutes of work! i have seen the shafts used for $80 (if bearing surface is good, no reason you couldn't use it) and $50 to balance. just having a helluva time tracking a place (or getting them to call me back) for the turbine shaft.
