Default Thicker oil w/ stock block?

I've seen were guys have been using heavier weight oils w/ built motors. I'm still running my stock block and am about ready for my 1st oil change since the install. I've had to add about half a quart every 500 miles so I thought I'd try going w/ the 15w50 Motul I see a lot are using. Is this too heavy for a stock block? I know there is a bigger filter that can be used as well. The Pathfinder one right? Same years?

APS Recommends 10w40 or 10w50 above 0F, or 5w30 under 0F

Run Rotella T-Synthetic 5W40. it is an oil designed for turbo charged motors. I have had great luck with it; you can find my oil analysis reports in the Oil Analysis thread. The Rotella has shown much better wear metal results when compared to the Motul 300V that I had run previously.

Plus, you can get the Synthetic Rotella at walmart or autozone!!!!

I run 10/40 mobil 1 as per aps instructions. I think you have bigger problems burning 1qt every 1000 miles. Is your car a 06 rev-up? If it is that would answer the question. You are going to have to keep up on your oil or 1 day the motor will seize. Building may be an option sooner than you planned. Sorry for the bad news.

Yes, it is a 06 Rev-up. I figured that was a part of the problem. Just thought it wouldn't hurt, since I have to change the oil anyway, to run the heavier oil. Will be getting the motor built as soon as I sell my bike hopefully in the next few weeks.

I've been reading the OA thread for the last hour. I think I'm gonna give it a try.

Yes.

The T-Syn uses Shell's XHVI base stock, which is a true synthetic oil formulated from synthetically produced slack wax. This can be verified by checking the MSDS of the oil, which I've done, to find XHVI base oil's CAS number, which is 92026-09-4.

The benefit of the XHVI base stock is a truly synthetic Group 3 compound that is not made from crude, and rivals PAO base stocks in every category. The base oil is very thermolyticaly stable, has a naturally wide viscosity index, and is not prone to hydrolysis in the presence of moisture like Ester base oils. The only real advantage a PAO has over XHVI is lower cold-pour points and better flow in extremely cold environments.

Shell uses this base oil in several formulas, including the Rotella T-Syn, and also sells it to other blenders, such as Castrol, for use in their oils.

The Shell Rotella T-Syn 5W-40 is a good oil for the FI crowd. It comes in a blue bottle, is easy to find (can be found at Wal-Mart among other places), and is inexpensive.

Will

edit: btw, It won't fix your oil consumption. That's a problem with your engine, and I wouldn't recommend using a particular oil grade just to mask the problem. The role of an oil is to lubricate, suspend contaminates, and help cool the engine. The T-Syn is designed to do all of this well, especially in a turbocharged engine, with an accepted viscosity grade. Just keep an eye on your level and be thankful the T-Syn does it's job well for so little money, since replacing a quart of some boutique oil every 1k miles can get expensive.

Thanks Will. I wasn't really thinking about using the thicker just b/c of the consumption but the heat. It gets pretty hot a humid here. If it helped w/ the consumption that would just be a added bonus.

What are your thoughts on using the 15w40 over the 5w40?

Yes it is good. I've been using it for thousands of miles on my carsince it was FI'd. The oil I buy says nothing about for bikes only. I get it in advanced auto parts.

Why would you want to use a 15W-40 instead?
