Default vortech upgrading to 2.87 what else do i need

this may be a dumb question but i have been reading and seems like everyone has a different opinion. i basically want to know when i upgrade from the 3.12 to a 2.87 what size injectors do i need? 550's or would 440's be ok? also when i put the walbro intank pump in do i need to remove my vortech fmu or can i leave it on? i am planning to leave the ssbox as my em for now so i want whatever will mesh the best with this setup.

Just stumbled across this and thought you should see it:

Sam,

I know you've seen it all. I'm well aware of your shop and knowledge on VQs. That's why when people call me and ask for a good shop in So Cal for a Vortech install or tune (350Z/G35) I recommend GTM. I was really disappointed when I read George's post. You guys have sent in a total of five (5) blowers from January 2008-January 2009. I know there were more before that due to the bearing issue (which is no longer an issue) but in George's post he claims "so many issues with Vortechs latley". With the hundreds of installs you do (I know they're not all Vortech) I'd say five issues is pretty good. Unless you've only installed five. I can appreciate your honesty with your customers. Since you're being so honest do you tell them that a 2.87" pulley will overspin the blower, and that overspinning the blower could cause it to fail? The SC-Trim bearings are rated for 53,000 RPM MAX. A 2.87 pulley on a non-revup @ 6600 RPM spins the blower @ 54,365 RPM. On a revup @ 7000 RPM it spins the blower @ 53,605 RPM. If the customer drives his/her car hard most of the time the blower will most likely fail at those RPMs.

I'm sorry to hear about your customers car. I hope he wasn't overspinning the sc. PM me the serial number on his blower, or give me or our service department a call. Hopefully we can resolve this without things getting "messy".

True dat ... feel free to use my RPM calculator in Excel to see how fast the blower is spinning at 100RPM increments.

440cc is never ok with the 2.87 pulley

you'll want around 550cc

if i knew better, I woulda went straight to the 750s as my 600s are almost maxed out with a CJM stage 2 RFS.

no one here seemed to be concerned with overspinning their blowers (even going as far to say its impossible to overspin on a serp belt system). Its just a matter of time til vortech stops doin such easy warranties, as they obviously monitor the forums.

I thought the impeller was rated at 53,000 rpms not the bearings. I was considering upgrading my impeller to the 928 one, so does this mean that I would need to upgrade the bearings as well?

I was wondering about this too. I figure when I go to the 2.87 and if I hurt my supercharger I will just put the 928 motorsports upgraded impeller in and have a re-tune.

I'm pretty sure it's the impeller that they're talking about. I sent Vortech an email asking for clarification.

the other thing i am curious about is i live right at a mile above sea level pretty much everything runs rich here due to the air being thinner will this effect the size of injectors i would need? at this point im considering scrapping the 2.87 idea and keeping my 3.12 and just getting it retuned because it is running soo pig rich on my stock injectors and fmu right now it woudl probably be a night and day difference with a better tune..

I'm running a 2.87 and I have the following to support it ...

600cc DW's, FunctionTUNED Fuel Return, Walbro 255 & UTEC, 1 Step Colder Plugs

Not sure how much the altitude would impact what you need, give your tuner a call and ask them.

Mariano at vortech told me its a combination of the bearings and the impeller design that comprise the rpm limits. And obviously Klimaxx (who works at vortech) feels the same.
