Default Fuel level gauge issues!!!!!!

Hey guys,

Here is the problem: I had to replace my fuel pump about a month and a half ago.(My fuel level gauge at the time wasn't working) I pulled the fuel pump assembly out and noticed that the fuel float arm had come completely off and the ground wire that is attached to the back of the arm had come undone as well. How all that happened i have no idea but anywho, so i reattached the float arm and resaudder the ground wire. Well when i got everything back together i cranked the car up and the gauge needle went to a little less than 1/4 of a tank and the dte went from 4 dashes to 68 miles, so i figured that everything was fixed. I took the car around the block and in under 5mins. the gauge was back on E and the dte went to 0. So i figured the ground came loose and i was tired of messing with it so i just left it alone. Well about a week ago i got into the car when i was leaving work, cranked it up and the gauge went to just above 1/4 and the dte went to 200miles and it stayed that way the entire way home. (about 45mins) I know that the gauge was wrong because i just filled up that morning but i was just happy to have that yellow light off, but the next morning the gauge didn't read at all and the dte was back to the dashes. Could it be the fuel sending unit? and if so where is it located? any help would be much appreciated because i am tired of guessing how much gas is in the car.

-Dave

Why are our fuel measurement systems so crappy? It seems that nearly everyone has SOME problem with theirs.

the sending unit is just the arm that measures the amount of fuel plus the little bracket that it attaches to the fuel bucket with.

just so you know there is two fuel sending units one behind the driver seat and the other behind the passenger seat that is connected to the fuel pump. They are very touchy so care is needed when putting them in so you dont bend the unit, I had the same issue as you did and replaced both of them cause there is no way of knowing which one is bent or reading the fuel differently. I also ended up buying a new fuel pump (was only an extra $100 with fuel sending unit already attached to it, other wise you'll have to disconnect the old unit and put on the new one which is a little risky cause it's just plasitic clips). The install is pretty easy i got it done in 40min could do it in 30min now knowing how to do it now. Just remember to pull the fuel pump fuse and try and start the car a couple of times so you can drain most of the excess fuel out of the fuel lines.

Seems like this is starting to happen to alot more 350z members i should've done a DIY oh well cant do it now Z is still in storage
