My wife doesn't really give me any problem with my hobbies. She knew I'm into cars the first time she met me so that is something she know will never change. She just want fairness so if I spend on my car then she can spend on her self the same amount.. lol that is why I dont tell her the full amount.

Every now and then she'll drive my car and next thing I know she'll tell me who she raced and how she spanked a civic or some guy stopping her asking about the car and giveng her props for driving a stick.. lol I can be racing on the freeway and she'll just sit in the car reading her magazine and not care about it. I try not to race anymore especially when she's with me coz I dont want her to get hurt.

I don't have a significant other, but my parents think I'm the biggest idiot in the world for putting all this money into a car.

Hey, I'm having fun and it's better than buying booze and drugs.

Mine loved my 350zTT. She was hoping I would TT the G37c also, since it was more comfortable and had the "butt warmers" lol. She wants a 335i now since its TT from factory and I am in Europe.

My fiance (getting married in one year) was absolutely pissed, because apparently I tell her I wanna do stuff all the time, but never do, so when I told her I was buying a supercharger, she said "ok cool", then when I came home with a supercharger she wasn't so happy haha. But then I bought her a Caddi CTS, so she shut up.

But I don't tell her how much I spend anymore, she used to be into the car scene and be cool with it, but she's changed alot now. So, I take the don't ask, don't tell policy.

Yeah, the 50/50 rule applies in my house as well. Gets expensive.

I think to many girls/women want to control their man. My ex tried and well she became my ex LOL. Ive always been fair never did I put the car in front of her. And mind you I was lucky to have my z @ 17 and go FI @ 18. BTW I did work for my things. I don’t think every time you spend 3k on your car you should spend 3k on her.

If you spend 3k on your car good next time you have 500 or 1k spoil her for a change but it doesn’t mean that you have to spend 3k on her. I think that’s just an excuse women use to get things more often LOL especially if they are married or with car guys. Cause they know we spend money on the cars so they want us to spend the same or more on them.

To close it off as long as the car and the spending on the car is not #1 your S.O shouldn’t give you crap for what you love when your with someone that you love or care about your happy to see that person doing what they love and if your S.O wants to be a part even better. My 2 cents

I never understood how a reasonable person could tolerate the 50/50 rule. Does your wife spend 50% of the cost of all the useless crap she buys on you?

In my situation, my wife was mildly jealous that I was buying all these "fun" parts for my car while she was still driving a beater '95 vw golf that was held together with german duct tape. After she graduated with her Doctorate degree last year we bought a mazdaspeed 3 for her to drive. Now I buy all kinds of parts for her car too and she's loving it.

PS - the MS3 rapes my Z in a straight line. My wife finds this incredibly humorous.

I built my car before we got married - she has spent the past few years trying to get me to sell it. She thinks it was the biggest waste of money ever and she isn't afraid to remind me of it from time to time.

All I hear is, when are you going to sell that car so you can get me a ring. My answer, when I decide to sell my car, you still won't get a ring until you deserve it! lol

I knew her views on the subject before we got engaged, so it's really not a big deal for me. We actually compliment each other because she is very conservative when it comes to money (she keeps cars for 10+ years and doesn't like to spend money unless it's a necessity) and I like to spend it as fast as I can make it.

I also have more leverage in the situation because we arn't struggling financially. If we had credit card debt or couldn't keep up with the bills/mortgage I would see her point and I might actually consider selling the car.

Honestly though, she is right. I've got $70K+ wrapped up in the car (car plus motor build/FI/etc) and I've driven it 20K miles in 5 years. The car, on a good day, is now worth $25K as is, so my little "hobby" has cost me $45K. That's a decent chunk of change!

No problem. She actually encouraged me to buy my kit.
The sportbike, however. That is STILL unwelcomed...

I had the car before I met my current gf. I know she thinks it a big waste of money since I rarely drive the car. But I made it very clear to her from day one that this what I do for fun. And that I go to work everyday sick or not. And I will never let anyone tell me what to spend my money on! And the same for her! We have seperate bank accounts. She can have whatever she wants, as long as she can pay for it. I helped cosign for a loaded Maxima last spring! She cant say a word!!!
