A good machinist, like a good tuner, are the absolute most important 2 things in an engine build. The rest of it (like what cam, what engine mgmt, what injectors, etc etc) is cream cheese - people seem to spend more time selecting the parts though, I guess because it's easier to get their hands around ? Those people end up usually doing things multiple times, till they realize that assembling an engine and building an engine aren't the same thing.

I strictly stick to selling parts. There are tons of great engine builders in the tri state area. Reasonably priced is a very subjective term IMHO - I'd tried to find someone who knows what they are doing (doesn't take any sort of VQ expert mind you), and who will help you understand the magnitude of your undertaking - those are the guys worth spending $ with, whatever their asking price may be.

hmm..any shop you would recommend getting it machined? Where did you get your work done? I also want a high speed crank balance at the same time.

Do you happen to sell arias ed pistons .02" ob piston rings? My distributors in Cali (my dad has a shop) where I get parts from stop carrying arias products...Forged and a few other sponsors here haven't replied to my PMs about them yet.

im not looking to get 650 on pump gas.
and on the fence with the meth kit.
if i get 550whp-575whp on pump gas i will be satisfied.

i will talk it over with the guy building my motor.
i've heard mixed things about 9:8:1...
he had 597whp on stock motor so i figure he knows what he is talking about.

Him having a stock motor doesn't help him in knowing anything about making a built motor.

that what he does.
he builds cars...
evo and z's mostly...
and he bought them because he was going to build the stock motor to get more power.

The BC3 on first drive ever at 75whp above the JWt setup felt SLOOWWWWWW

The immediate nastiness was gone, and I felt like it never made up for it up top. I had the car retuned and drove it more and realized I liked it better. Less midrange helps me hook up at much higher power levels, and the top end is nuts. The idle is so, so, below is a vid of it.

BUT-I do miss my S1 cams, IMO most people would prefer their idle and powerband.

did your retune adjust cam timing to pick up some of the low end/mid range?

In my last build, I had 8.8:1 and we pulled the timing back to around 10-11 degrees at the boost levels we needed to get to 600 RWHP. Now, this was a safe, conservative tune. However, with the boost he will need to get to his horsepower levels, he will be knocking unless he does one of the three things I mentioned, that is: run meth injection, run race gas, or use an oversized stroker motor. 650 - 700 RWHP is not going to happen on pump gas in a 3.5L VQ35DE motor with 9.8:1 compression without a lot of knocking. If he doesn't mind the consequences of knocking, then that's his choice. But he certainly should not be encouraged to do so (unless your looking to sell more parts when his motor prematurely gives out).

you're preaching to the choir my friend, he pm'd me before - he has alot more research to do IMHO

Admittedly, I'm sorta sworn to secrecy on my machinist, only because I know he doesn't really want to deal with the forum crowd. It's why I don't get into selling built engines either.

Yes, we carry Arias, or you should be able to call them up and buy them direct as well

So does he have a 596 whp car? On that dyno, with that correction factor yes. Let's keep things in perspective though - just because 1 guy does it, doesn't mean that is now gospel. It simply means 1 guy did it (and needed a generous correction factor to get there). It's not a knock on the guy at all as I am sure the car is plenty fast.

I'm not arguing the point with you at all. Like I said in my pm, you need to do alot more research, as you're chasing a seemingly arbitrary # without much real facts as to what it legitimately takes to get there. You seem hung up on using these super special sauce 9.8:1 pistons like your friend with the stock block got for himself. That's all fine and well...but those pistons aint going to a magically make a greddy 18g kit run 700 whp in Denver, or in NYC, or any other altitude in between on mere boost alone. Seems you're looking for validation for whatever road you are choosing to go down. If your working with a shop, and you trust that shop, whomever they are, that should be all the validation you need. Do the build, post your results, good or bad, and let us know how it goes.

You do realize that the only reason that block remained in one piece is because he wasn't ACTUALLY making that power, right? 1.18 correction factor means about 500 whp uncorrected. Not terrible, but nothing spectacular either for a Greddy kit, on stock compression, at 15-16 psi. Take that car to sea level and BOOM!
