Default Rebuilding 18G turbo question

One of my turbos has shaft play, back forth and side to side. Its not major but still not good. I wanna rebuild this. I wouldnt imagine the process being too hard, pretty straight forward however i have never built one before so can i get some opinions on wether it is a difficult task and where to get the rebuild kits.

Have it checked first. Mistubishi turbos have a lot of play (more than you would think) even when they are brand new.

it is not hard, main thing is to have a vice to hold it while trying to unbolt the nut that holds the shafts.

I did both of mine when I rebuilt the engine, mainly due to them having 20k miles and I had them out, Jeremy is right they have quite a bit of play in them to begin with.

You can get the rebuild kits on ebay, just check them out to make sure they have all of the parts needed

also make sure you notice how the housings are in relation to each other before you take them apart so you put them back the same way or the turbos wont point in the right direction when you reinstall them

well even if it does have alot of play from the factory, i can push the compressor side wheel all the way to the wall. I dont think thats good, HOWEVER there is no oil leak or anything. It just moves back forth and side to side.

ALso, what causes the shaft from moving. What in the cartridge is going bad that lets the shaft move?

Honestly, you can push a lot of turbos into the wall if you push them. Are there any marks on the housing from it hitting while running?

no, there are no marks or scratches from the blades.

Ive owned 3 other turbokits in my life and none of them ever touched the wall. This one does but i guess you know better than i do.

Would you think its worth rebuilding anyways, it only has 7000 miles on it and a rebuild kits only like 60 bucks on ebay.

Honestly, if it was mine, i would not rebuild it. BUT, i dont want to be held liable on here if it failed so you do what you feel like it should have done.

Any good ways of testing a turbo prior to puttin it on. Cuz once this goes on, i dont wana have to take it back out. I just wanna make sure everything is good.

Turbos are really hard to test out unless you have the facility to do so.

You could always send it out for a piece of mind.

OP-if it makes you feel any better I have 11K on my Greddy snails still going strong.

I thought about rebuilding at 9K when the motor let go but decided against it. Good luck!

turbos should last more than 20k miles even if you drive really hard, unless the turbo has a manufacture defect
