Default A little help...

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me, before I have to tow my car

I have HKS s/c setup, fuel return system, vpro, afk, etc. My car drove fine last week when it passed emissions with no problems. Today, however, I started the car up, but then it died about 10 seconds later. Now it turns over, but will not start up. I have fuel pressure readout on my CAMP2 screen, but it goes "dark" when ignition is starting, and will not display readings while trying to start up car. I think I can hear the fuel pump hum when ignition is in "on" system. Cipher diagnostics does not show any thrown DTC's.

I had a similar issue when the weather turned cold sharply (too much fuel--ruinning way to rich on startup) in the winter. Now that it is hot, similar experience, but unsure on A/F. I have a fcon vpro that I thought has temp. correction, but dunno for sure.

Does anyone have any thought/suggestions for troubleshooting before I tow the car? Last time I had to tow, the driver f*cked up my bumper which was a pita to fix, so I want to exhaust all possible troubleshooting in case it could be a quick fix to get me back up running. If I tow, I'm going to use a company that has a roller system on their flatbed to avoid damage.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Thx.

I would check the fuel pressure first, if you are saying it did start but then died 10 seconds later. And, now it won't start at all. Sounds like you aren't getting any fuel. Just a guess, though.

Have you try reset ecu? Or maybe TB went bad?

I called GRD, who installed the S/C and did the tuning. I was going through some troubleshooting tips on the phone. Hopefully I will be able to speak to the tuner before I have to tow the car in.

It may be flooded. You can just wait a while and retry (maybe with jump cables on so you don't kill your battery). You can try to compensate for the excess fuel by putting the pedal to the floor to open the throttle body (just once, do not pump the pedal or you'll make it worse) and crank. Or disconnect the fuel pump fuse and crank. Then reconnect and try to start as usual.

Temperature compensations are difficult to get 100% perfect and require some trial and error under different environmental conditions (too many different part combinations to predetermine values with accuracy). I would schedule an appointment to take back to your tuner during really hot or really cold conditions. Will take them 5 mins to dial it in.

Good luck! It all comes down to fuel, air, or spark.

Yes, it started, then died ~10 sec. later and won't start now, just cranks. When CAMP2 display is on when key is is"on" position, fuel pressure reads b/w 2 and 3 psi. When I try to start car, the CAMP2 display blacks out so I can't see what the fuel pressure is when trying to start up engine. Maybe I should try to inspect fuel lines, etc?

Thanks for the suggestions. Your explanations seem spot on. Maybe I will wait for a cool night and try to drive over there, to avoid a tow. When it was tuned last (~45F) it was much much cooler than it is now (93F).

Are you saying that with the key "on", you are only seeing around 3 psi of fuel pressure ?

+1

If the CAMP2 reading is correct with the 3 psi reading, then thats one of the problems, or possibly "the" problem.

Should be around 46-48 psi is what my car reads on my defi fuel pressure gauge.

You should be MUCH higher on the fuel pressure, unless you are reading the return or something whacky.

If it started again and then died, it could be the fuel pressure. You prolly have enough built up to start the car, but not enough to keep it running.

You could try spraying fuel into the TB and seeing if it keeps running. Pull the intake and spray some cleaner directly into the manifold. If that works, then you are definitley starving for fuel.

With the ignition in the "on" position, with accesory power on, but not trying to start the car, I am only seeing 3psi of fuel pressure.

If the engine is priming when the ingition is in the "on" position, this of course is way way too low, and I essentially am seeing no fuel. I should be seeing at least 28-29 psi on when "priming" and high 40's while driving?

Maybe the fuel pump went bad. It ran fine one week ago and has been sitting in the driveway since. Looks like I'll be towing early next week, unless I can get the car to run before then.

It should prime to over 40psi once you turn your key to on, but not start.

I would check the fuel pump fuse and battery voltage. If those are both ok, then it'd be the fuel pump that's gone. You're not low on gas are you? Running low on fuel can kill the pump quickly from overheating. Might want to bring a gallon of fuel back to your car just in case your fuel level gauge is not reading right.

Good points Raj.
