Curious what break-in method you're using....the typical safe way or the drive-it-like-you-stole-it-to-break-in-rings-better method....

So what about the block and the filler material expanding at different rates? How about the unrelieved stresses from the welding?

Some people are claiming that they do reduce cooling in the upper part of the cylinder, which would not be good. Nonetheless, both the SuperTech and KMS block guards have numerous small cooling passages and, of course, they will need to be drilled out with much larger cooling passages to match those in the head gasket.

Another solution could be to only use portions of the block guard at structurally significant locations. For example, instead of completely surrounding the cylinders and then drilling holes, perhaps weld in a 2" section on the two opposing portions of each cylinder that are aligned with the rotation of the crank.
I would think that the small iron-aluminum-aluminum boundary layer would help to conduct heat away from the top of the cylinders vs the iron-coolant-aluminum interface.

Quick question. If closing an older block with over 100k miles wouldn't oil sweat out of the block during welding and compromise the weld?

If I remember correctly, the coolant contamination made it difficult to do this and took the welder quite a bit of time.

why did you use rev-up cooling system that passes coolant to the heads at the rear cylinders instead of the HR that passes coolant to the exhaust valves??? are you planning blowing the headgaskets out the rear of the engine??? just an observation... and the VR38 deck does have holes to alow coolant to the heads through the gaskts... oil cools the combustion chambers coolant is around the cylinders for quick warmup for emissions... I think that is all of my 2 cents...

thats the block they made for TTG35forT. Its sittin at Japtrix right now awaiting install, so Sam has no idea about the temps as it was his 1st motor out of the shop.

This thread was the inspiration for me to get my short block flat-decked. Thank you Jasonvs2146!!! Prior to this thread, I didn't even know it could be done to the VQ35DE block.

I spoke with Japtrix today, we are scheduled to get started on Sunday.
