quick question. Im building my motor for my 500whp build and my machinist needs my flywheel to balance my motor. HOWEVER, my flywheel is in my car and it would cost me alot of downtime and money to remove my flywheel from my car since my Z is my daily driver. SO i looked in the marketplace and online and see that the ebay brand "F1 Racing" has a flywheel for fairly cheap. I personally wouldnt and ebay brand clutch for such high hp build but im thinking maybe ill be alright with the FLYWHEEL ONLY. My question is would i be jeopardizing my built motor if i used just a F1 racing flywheel with my competition stage 4 clutch thats already in my car?

P.S. ive sereached other forums and found positive review for other vehicles.

First off your flywheel should be balanaced independently already. I don't see a reason why you would need the flywheel to balance the rotating assembly since they are balanced already.

Second, I have not heard anything about the F1 Racing flywheel, not to say they are bad though. However, you are talking about what I presume is a fairly expensive motor. IMO, buy a reputable flywheel and be done with it. We save $200 and risk a couple thousand? Not to mention that you can find flywheels in the market place for between $200-300 used if need be from companies that have proven to hold well over 500whp.

 

Thats what i thought. i thought i could internally balance my motor (in absence of the flywheel and crank pulley) but i made a thread about that and i got diffent answers.

2ndly, lets say i did buy that F1 racing flywheel and got it rebalanced would it be okay for my 500whp build or not??? or is quality the main concern???

 

have your motor "zero balanced" so you can use any flywheel you want. you dont need the flywheel to get the rotating assembly balanced.

 

You can get a proven flywheel for under $200 more. If you're building it up to 500 whp, then spending an extra $200 on a good part won't matter. It's also lighter

I don't think anyone will have an answer for you. Again, spend the extra money on a new flywheel from RPS, JWT, Spec or Fidanza. Those have all been used on high horsepower builds successfully. You can find them used for around $200 in the classifieds and almost all of them come with replacable wear surfaces so no biggy. I am selling my JWT for $200 but a local person is buying it.

I actually never got around to installing it have had it sitting in my apt for about a year now. Dont you run a SPEC twin on your build? I'm sure its over kill for my current set up, so I'm going to sell it

how are spec twin disc??? i asked hal at injected performance and he said GARBAGE. but granted thats only 1 opinon. lol

 

its slips nicely for the street and strip and held my previous power just fine.

notchy going into 1st and reverse, but my slave cylinder might have been leaking. They've got good customer support, but I am thinking I shoulda just put in the tilton triple cerma-metallic since my tranny was out recently.

 

Every machine shop is different. The shop I will be using wants the flywheel, clutch and crank pulley to balance the motor. Giving the shop these parts will allow them to do a better job at balancing the motor. But you don't have to do it, they can just do the short block as well. My best advice is talk with the shop that is doing the work about the pros and cons of balancing with and without the parts, since you are investing thousands of dollars in a motor.
