Question VQ Audiophiles: Lend me your ears...

Click on it to see the video. Video was shot under the front passenger side.

Done some research on it and it's not low / slow enough for engine knock but could be some valvetrain noise perhaps? Most of the youtube vids I've seen were attrocious engine knock sounds and some resembled what I heard when I bent a rod back in March... nothing like this.

Also should mention running the 5/40 motul X-Max and it's been trending towards the chillier side (4C / 8C). Pretty sure many of you might know I'm built short block and most of my mods are in my mod list. The sound occurs at startup right through to warmed up and shut down.

I'm a bit hypersensitive after my build debacle... so let me down easy if it's just some silly tick that every VQ does.

does sound change with RPM?

Almost sounds like the injectors......injectors on these cars are loud due to batch firing.

Go to Princess Auto and get this:

and start poking around. It does sound like injectors to me as well.

Injectors good or injectors bad? AFR seem to be okay but I'm only single wideband...

Thom I noticed you said they sound loud on these cars because of batch firing... keeping in mind I'm very new to the mechanical side of life... are you saying it like "they are loud when they batch fire- you have a problem" or like "injectors on these cars batch fire so they sound loud and it's perfectly normal"

Just looking for clarity.

And to BP... I "hear" you... but half the battle is figuring out what I'm hearing and learning whether it's good or bad.

I'm passing by a lordco today so perhaps I can find something similar!

Neither, just loud. If a/f ratio is fine, they are working fine as well.

The first time I installed aftermarket injectors, fired the car up and heard the ticking. Thought I had droped something in to the intake...ect.

Picked up the stethoscope and started poking around. As soon as I touched the fuel rail, I knew it was injectors. Closed the hood and started tuning.

The injectors are just loud. I don't know why, but they all are on these cars. It is neither good nor bad.

they batch fire, that means that a group are firing together (I am not sure if its all 6 fire at once, or if its one bank at a time).

Go get a stethoscope and just start listening...but too me it just sounds like injectors.

kinda sounds like when my belt got all focked up. It was tearing but still had a lot of tension... decided not to change it out because the car was about to go under the knife in a couple of days anyway.

Stock ECU should not really continue batch firing unless something is wrong:

Wow car sounds so quiet. Get a louder exhaust and all your worries will disappear.

Lol at ^

I got the stethoscope as suggested and WOW did that ever bring the problem front and center. Well. Not problem- but the sound was unmistakeable. Thanks for the advice!!

I gave a listen to everything I could reach. Really interesting!

Thanks again guys.

Seeing how calm you "seem" I assume it was the injectors? That tool (stethoscope) is great for checking idler bearings as well. Takes 5 seconds to find a bad one.

Then you can take it inside and tell the old lady that the doctor is in the house....

Yes... the rails were really chattering- pretty evident immediately, just as you said. As for the doc in the house- a stethescope with a probe like that would lead to nothing but trouble.

As binder pointed out from the FSM, batch firing only occurs during cranking.
