My recent turbo upgrades and awesome experience!!!
So right before this winter, I had discovered that I had cracked a manifold that needed to be replaced and had my intakes leaking down oil pressure. So I knew I was going to pull the motor out of the car to replace the manifolds and also refresh a bunch of stuff in my motor (Sprockets, chains, tensioners, valve cover gaskets, etc...)
Once I had the motor and turbos out of the car, I discovered my turbos were basically JUNK. I had tremendous shaft play on my passenger one specifically.
I knew I wanted to retain my 18g kit for its responsiveness and reliability. So I searched and searched for different turbo builders, and Narrowed it down to Forced Performance and Boost Lab. I decided to go with Kirk at Boost Lab because of his reputation in the Supra World and on the Supra Forums, not too mention alot of FP turbos have failed on evos by me in the last year and these are a PITA to get to if there's a problem.
Anyway, I told Kirk I wanted to upgrade my turbos to the 20g wheels which retain the same exhaust wheels and thrust bearings. He recommended upgrading my thrust bearings to oversize, which I opted for. I had also been hitting the housings themselves on the insides with the wheels. So I needed to machine my compressor housings and exhaust housings and get a new exhaust housing, new heat shields, and of course the upgraded thrust bearings as well. A few days later, Kirk called and said for the same price he was able to source upgraded billet wheels that outflow the 20g turbos. This was a no brainer for me, and I opted for the upgrade.
Long story short, he did a super fantastic job. He basically built me new turbos from scratch, and they look like they just came off a shelf.
He kept in contact with me the whole time, and I would extremely recommend anyone trying to upgrade their turbos or just have them rebuilt talk to Kirk at Boost Lab. His reputation in the Supra world is extremely apparent to me now after seeing my turbos in front of my very own eyes.
Below are some photos of his work, and by far he will get all my turbo work in the future in terms of rebuilds/ upgrades.

No charge to upgrade from cast to billet compressor wheel? That's a pretty sweet deal!
Since the exhaust housings had to be replaced, I'm assuming the turbine wheel had to be replaced also?

haha, thanks guys, I'm excited to see what kind of difference this will make.
I start this weekend putting things back together. Motor is all closed back up, just need to re-stud and bolt up the manifolds, turbos, and drop is back in...

The bearing housings were retained, I had to have a new exhaust housing and he was able to machine the other one. The compressor housings were machined also.
Rich, the price of buying new turbos and upgrading to billets was more than this route. I could have gone the route of PT or Garrets, but then i'd be re-piping too. The opportunity cost seemed much greater this route, and in the end am super happy. I can't wait to put it all back together and see what it makes this time around.
