Question Oil cooler size recommendations

Hey guys,

After speaking with a fellow board member at a track day that experienced catastrophic engine failure and doing some further reading on the importance of an oil cooler, I have decided to build myself a kit.

But I am not sure what size of cooler is optimal.

My setup is not wild: APS TT with all of the APS upgrades, 466whp.

Debating between 19/25/34 row Setrab cooler. Will be using -10 lines.

Anyone have some experience to share?

Thanks in advance.

i have the 25 row trucool setup from racer parts wholesale. my stuff dosnt get past 190 in traffic(neither does my coolant temps) on a 85 degree day, dosnt get past 170 on the highway.with a vented hood i would expect even lower.

it all depends on what your current oil temps are without the cooler and where you mount it.

more direct airflow, the smaller it can be. your oil needs to be around 170*. any cooler and you are not doin your motor any favors.

This raises a good topic of discussion... I run the Stillen kit which uses a Setrab cooler and my temps sit around 180-200 cruising and 220 when I make a few WOT pulls. However, I do run a stock radiator which definitely has some effect on that.

I ran dual 19 row Mocal coolers and the car still **** the bed. Just get a thermostatic plate to control temps from being too cool in the winter and it should be fine. The issue is getting a cooler that is so big and centered in the front fascia that it looks like the car has buck teeth.

My reading suggests that the thermostatic sandwich plate is crucial. I live in Canada, too, and while the car never sees snow, temps can be low even in good driving weather.

Ordered from Racer Parts Wholesale today:

Mocal Sandwich plate adapter (MOC-SP1FT)
Setrab 25-row (SET-A25F22-10)
Aeroquip socketless hoses and fittings

Hope to install before a Time Attack this Sunday. Never done an install like this before but it looks quite simple as long as I can find a good spot to mount the cooler.

My OBD2 reader does not pull oil temperatures from the ECU. Does the 2003 not have an OEM oil temp sensor? That kinda surprised me...

Chose the 25-row cooler as it was at least as big as some here with more extreme motor builds. Figured bigger was better as long as I had the sandwich plate to allow for enough heat. This may also allow for an install in a less than ideal spot, if required.

Good thread, I just saw racerpartswholesale makes a pre-made kit with everything we need for our cars:

love my setup i know alot of people mention to keep oil temp above 170 but i can tell you right now my oil temps dont go above 140 unless im driving(lowest reading on the gauge is 140 so might be even under that.) even then it takes about 15 minutes of driving in 80 degree days to hit 160 in stop and go traffic and at that point its not even using the oil cooler. imo really cant go wrong with this setup(although i have a trucool cooler not the setrab)
