Default Is this ball bearing turbo rebuild kit legit?

I've read all over the web that you can't rebuild garrett bb turbos, but I found this. Anyone know if its legit?

Correrct, ball bearing turbos can't be rebuilt (at least Garretts, like you said). You have to replace the entire CHRA. If there was a cheap, new way to do it, believe me, EVERYBODY would be doing it, since most any CHRA is $900+.

Actually they could be rebuild, if you have right ball bearings. Unfortunately Garrett won't sell them separately.

I used to work for a turbo rebuilder a few years back. I came into this thread to call bullsh*t but that kit actually looks legit.

They show to offer balancing services for $50 which is a great price IF they have a VSR balancer. Make sure they do before you send your turbo in or they're not doing it right. When I was in that industry, I only knew of two California companies that had VSR balancers, Turbonetics and Turbo Engineering.

I highly doubt Garrett is the manufacturer of this rebuild kit. So who's manufacturing the ball bearings themselves and the sleeve which they sit in? Both have to be very precise for something that could spin up to 150,000+ RPMS.

The products and services offered on their website look really good but I'm still skeptical. Call them up, let us know what you find out because I'm curious now, lol.

I've heard they do not have a VSR balancer. The manufacturer of that rebuild kit is probably someone in Taiwan/China. For $300 it's not worth the gamble. Do not trust!

Either buy a new CHRA or go through Garrett's exchange program. Both options will get you a "new" turbo and warranty.

Just did a quick search and it appears *some* BB turbos are rebuildable, however, the article I read said Precision is just like Garrett, with no OEM rebuild options....seeing that those are two of the most popular turbo brands, that's why the "rumor" that you can't rebuild them has circulated so much.

Turbonetics and Comp Turbos are "rebuildable" when sent back to the them. Anything is "rebuildable".

The way a Garrett BB turbo is built, you have two ball bearing "assemblies" that sit in a race. One on the compressor side, one on the turbine side. The only thing hold those all of those little ***** in place is the inner sleeve. When you take one of these turbos apart all of those little ***** just fall out.

It's not that Garretts "can't" be rebuilt. It's that Garrett doesn't make a rebuild kit and why would they? They make more money selling new turbos and CHRAs. It would also be a pain in the *** to do because the ball bearings are not packed together like a Comp or Turbonetics BB assembly. Finally, there's the balancing issue. VSR machines are rare, those who have it will either make you pay a premium or don't want to do it for you. Try sending a Garrett to Turbonetics to see if they'll balance it for you.

I got a quote from Precision once to rebuild a journal bearing pt5857 and it was $375 or somewhere around there...figure a BB is considerably more and you start to approach the price of a CHRA. I'm guessing Garrett did the math and said "close enough."

Yeah, I was talking more about the companies who DO rebuild BB turbos. I'm sure it's close to the price of a new CHRA.
