I just recently installed a used Vortech with a 3,12 pulley, installed new belts, and added CNT high flow cats (new gaskets) and had my car tuned with UpRev. I noticed that when I'm in boost >4k rpm, I can smell what I think smells like oil or burning rubber. Mind you, I'm not roasting my tires either. When I looked under the hood, everything looked and smelled fine. Anybody have this problem? What should I be looking at?
..had that rubber smell when the hose clamp tail end on the silicone coupler near the cog belt was hitting the cog belt...shredded it in 5 miles...always keep a spare belt on hand and don't trust some shop to install it correctly
Okay, so it's now the end of summer and I still have the smell after about 3,000 miles. No unusual belt wear or dust. I noticed the smell the other day after about 5K rpms. Could I have a worn supercharger seal or maybe I have a small filter attached to the hose that should have went into the intake filter? The air filter that was included didn't have the inlet to connect that hose to the filter.
So you're venting valve cover to the atmosphere through that small filter? That could definitely be a source of the smell.
That's what I'm thinking as well, in boost anything without a check valve on the pressure side, especially on the PCV system will cause the smell. Most of us S/C guys use a catch can because venting it to atmosphere stinks and it always seems to come in the car. I don't have a 350z so I wouldn't know where the PCV hoses are routed but with Whipple S/C on my Ford, we have a pcv under the intake, vent that right to atmosphere otherwise it will blow oil right into the intake on boost. Another one each valve cover.
The brake booster is also either with a check valve or put on the inlet of the S/C but you can't do that because that would mean moving the throttle body before the S/C.
