My FI Build Plan (Need help)
OP, what car are you coming from??? What have you been driving since you got your license only 2 years ago??? Are you ready for a RWD car with 400+ hp??? I fell in love with high-hp cars when I was your age too, but I was taught to be extremely responsible with them since my parents didn't have the $$$ to give me for my cars. Everything always came out of MY wallet.
Another member made a very good point mentioning what will happen with your buddy in the car and a Mustang pulls up next to you at a red light. Are you going to back down if he starts revving his motor??? No, you won't, neither will your buddy- he'll keep egging you on to race. You'll either end up showing off, wrapping your (I mean Mom and Dad's) Z around a pole (Thanksgiving, anyone???) or seriously injuring yourself or another. Why would the approx 300hp not suffice??? Don't you think you should learn the vehicle you want to mod before you go crazy with it??? Are your parents just handing you money rather than throwing it into the fireplace??? Probably not. I'm not trying to hate on you, but do your parents know what your plans are for this car?

even my "simple/safe" idea to FI the daily whip is due to the fact that its a cheap initial expense, i have immediate access to sponsored labor, and i know what a junkyard engine costs .. and have the room to purchase one immediately if bad things occur. Im old though lol.
These cars WILL fk you when youre broke and alone on a road in the middle of nowhere. Trust.
this is not opinion, this is not just valid, it is TRUTH.

Okay here we go, I am getting a compression leakdown test to see the strength of the VQ and if all goes well from there I will go for the Vortech S/C on a Conservative tune from Slow Motion in Columbus OH. Wish me luck guys.
As a stock Z guy who's listening in on these conversations, it seems one good way to approach this would be to buy another motor and have it built or modded to stand up to your end hp goal, then install it with the FI. Keep your current motor on the side as a reliable and known backup when/if the FI'd motor goes down.
It's crazy how most people just think it's a simple pistons + rods for a built motor.
And then theres.....
Bearings, oil pump, fuel pump, injectors, engine management, head studs, gaskets, clutch/fly, exhaust, etc etc etc....
Op...100k miles + Fi = not a good idea / gamble.
If you had 70 to 80k miles...maybe. then again , you may be lucky but like said have a plan b for sure. GL.

Okay so first off, I'm Matt, I know I'm new here but I have been following this forum since I got my beautiful orange 04 350z about a year ago. I know I can probably find all my answers somewhere on this forum but I wanted to make a thread specific to my situation. I am 18 years old and picked up my Z with 80k miles on it for 12 grand from a dealer. I have a Nismo Catback exhaust and Nismo CAI, and some cheapo non resonated test pipes. I am planning on going FI sometime soon, I have been looking at the vortech for sometime and another kit also caught my eye http://www.neotuned.com/nissan-350z-...turbo-kit.html , yes it is a godspeed kit with a authentic Turbonetics turbo and wastegate. My question about that is what parts if any would I need to replace to make this kit reliable. Is it reliable at all? Remember I am only 18, I work 40 hour weeks for little pay while still in school, so I am on a budget. Also my motor has 100k miles on it so Im guessing a rebuild would be necessary before I boost it. Would new forged pistons and rods make up for the fact its a 100k motor running boost? My plan was to forge the motor spending about 1500-2000 on parts and whatever on labor. Then later down the road add FI either the $2500 turbo kit or the vortech plus supporting parts. My goal is 400-450 RELIABLE daily driven Rwhp. Any info, experience or help will be much appreciated.
forced induction, budget, and reliable do not belong in the same sentence together.
its already been said, you get what you pay for, cheap product, cheap results
it is not by any means CHEAP, nor reliable. if you install correctly and have someone trustworthy install the kit, it will live for awhile but you will always have some kind of problem down the road with 100k miles. you should do a complete rebuild replacing the pistons along with your valves, every gasket, rods, bearings blah blah blah you should change all your hoses just to make sure you dont end up with a leak somewhere. anything inside the engine thats not the block itself you should probably change to get further away from having your engine pop under the pressure of forced induction. the crankshaft is probably the only thing you wont have to worry about.
i as well will be using the vortech supercharger soon with 100k miles on my z. it should be fine for a little while without changing anything, but i will be rebuilding it very soon after and i highly doubt seeing track time before i do a rebuild. do a lot of research, find the place you want to take it to. someone who has experience installing forced induction in the z, and ask them what they would advise you do for a proper install.
bet you end up disappointed or messing your engine up
