Default Thinking long term with turbos..

I know turbos kill the engine life faster and I was wondering which kit on the market will be the most reliable as far as long term and longevity but still be able to gain a lot of power?

SC would be best for long term reliability IMO.

but all will probably last a long long time if properly maintained and not over worked.

Depends what kind of supercharger you have. A roots type supercharger DESTROY's the engine like STILLEN's. Due to the major HIGH temp's because of lack of intercooler. Now if its intercooled its a different story, but roots generate so much heat which is insane. I had a supercharger on my Civic (Jackson Racing) and when I connected my engine management to it, the intake temp were above 185 degrees!!! The jackson caused so much heat soak it was not fun. When I got the greddy with intercooler my avg intake tem was about 90-100 degrees at a stop sign.. Under boost it would go as low at 75% on a hot day. Honestly BOOST is BOOST. And will take longevity of the motor either or, reliability depends on how proper your car is tuned. TUNING is key to everything, you have have success with both supercharged and Turbo... I prefer turbos over superchargers any day.

So it wouldnt matter how much boost, what kind of turbos, as long as its maintained and tuned right, it should last a while?

Your engine is only as strong as your weakest link. 5-8psi of boost on our engines with proper tuning could last as long as the car believe it or not. Ive seen many stock engines with crazy amount of boost, but like the saying goes... Your engine is only as strong as your weakest link, so sure you can have great tuning but your rods are weak than they are going to give out. But we were speaking conservative. And speaking coservative is any off the shelf, GREDDY, VORTECH, PRO-CHARGER.. ETC... properly tuned with their recommended boost levels should have no problem. You have the right setup but not be tuned and its over... HELL you can have a BULLET PROOF engine built to the mad to handle over 30PSI and one mistake or bad tuning can damage that motor.

So assuming your tuning is top notch (as I expect mine will be with TS's ECu on my TTs) as much as 8 psi of boost is safe in the long term? This is going to be a street car with very occasional track days. So it's not like I will be boosting the crap out of it to its limit every day.

I though .5 bar (7.35 psi) was kind of pushing it. So you think it's safe in the long term?

With a good tune you should be fine. But only time will tell.
