Looks like it was degreased with caustic (NaOH). That's standard practice for cast iron engines, but caustic attacks aluminum vigorously. Aluminum shouldn't ever be cleaned with anything having a pH higher than 7. In other words, acids are ok, but bases are a definite no-no.
