Default vortech woes

well, i had an interesting morning, i left work as usual, i have to get on the interstate to get to work, and i usually get on it pretty good going down the onramp, hitting redline, and reaching speeds around 120, today it kinda sputtered around 6000 but it had ben doing that because i was pulling too much timing, anyways i get on the interstate and bring it up to around 90, and after about 5 miles the car shuts completely off!! WTF?

well needless to say im on a 3 lane, and im in the far left lane, i immediately swerve over and exit on an offramp, got lucky there, and my car is still sputtering, so i bring it to a halt halfway up the offramp, get out, look around, i smell something burning, and smell some gas, i pop the hood and cant see anything suspicious, so i walk around to the passenger side and lean down and what do i see? A damn puddle about four feet wide of **** under the car and stuff dripping down. smells like gas, but when i stick my finger in it, its hot and looks like oil. DAMN, i let the car roll back some so i can get a good look. big puddle, still dripping but i cant get a good look until i get a flashlight.

all of a sudden im thinking about a new built engine, im glad i got in on the groupbuy! but the thought of buying a block was killing me.

i definitely didnt want to call a towtruck, so i call my wife and she brings me some jackstands and my jack and some tools. im expecting to find a huge hole in the block and be face to face with a rod, after about 10 minutes of working on my car on the offramp, i have the undercover off, and realize the damn freakin hose coming off of the fuel pump is disconnected! i guess some oil or something got on it and moistened it up and caused it to slide out. so with all of my might i slid it back in and it fired right up.

boy was i thankful. so i drove it home and got in the jeep just to be sure, im gonna stop by autozone on the way home and get some heavy duty clamps.

Oh man, I know that feeling of expectation when you think you've blown something expensive (not with my Z, but some of my past cars). Your heart races, and you get real tense, at least you kept the bigger picture in mind (built motor).

Glad it wasn't anything major, and your just out a few hours and some gas.

Default Clamps

Sorry to hear about your trouble and I am glad it was an easy fix.

Question: I am planning on replacing the same clamps this weekend to avoid this problem. Does anyone know if pressure is still built up in those lines after the motor is off? I don’t want a face full of gas

yeah pressure is still built up after the motor is off, not much, but there is some, just wrap a shop towel around it when you disconnect it.

Welcome to the club! The same thing happened to me (the spring-lock connection popped) and then baptist and one other member that I can think of. It spooked me at first by then when I saw the fuel pressure gauge I knew it was not as bad as I first thought. This is something that I think Vortech need to look at.

mine was actually at the fuel pump, where that short length of larger hose comes off and connects to the smaller one, but i know which one you are talking about. i looked there first just because i remembered what happened to you guys.

I priced out all of the fittings and hose that would be needed to replace all of the Vortech hoses with Aeroquip fittings and hose and it came in at about $270. If I have this problem again, I am going that route. Did you use the hose clamps that came with the Vortech kit?

==============================

If it’s not too much trouble could you post the needed parts from: AEROQUIP. I would love to get this out of the way before it happens to me.

Here is one of my preliminary charts using Summit part numbers which may or may not be correct. I cannot find the final one so, feel free to use this as a starting point ....

dude...this happened to McDuck as well. This is definately a design flaw/corner cutting job by Vortech. I hope them improve future kits...becuase fuel is something you DONT wanna ever mess with.
