Default timing retard- how necessary?

running 6lbs, how necessary is it to retard the timing at higher rpm's? i just dont feel 100% right with the greddy timing harness and the diodes setup... and the fear of burning out the coils if the ignition is switched on...

should i do it anyway and stop worrying, or is it a non-issue at 6lbs???

any update as to when greddy will come out with a tested and safer method to retard timing?

It is perfectly safe....at least for the 10 plus people on this board that are using the diodes setup. As long as you NEVER leave the car in the "on" position but engine not running. I've had mine for 6 months and about 7000 miles...no problems.

On CA gas, I honestly think its an absolute requirment...even at stock boost. On 93 octane fuel, its optional in my mind...at stock boost.

I am using the Greddy ignition harness with the diodes as suggested here in the forum for more than 3 months.

I never experienced any problems with the diodes as I take all the precautions- never leave key in the on position for a long period of time, car really feels great!

I used to run my Greddy TT set up at 6.5 psi without ignition retard, the motor was detonating at high Rpm's and as result the tip of a spark plug broke and one of my exhaust valves was hitten by that- at cyl Nr 3 if I remember correctly.

Now I run my car at 7.2 psi and with timing retard it never detonates, not even at track.

I have the diodes and the timing harness is in but I get no RPM signal! Is it because of the harness or what?

boost on a high compression motor with no timing pulled =BOOM!

general rule of thumb is 1 degree per psi!

I've heard 1 degree per psi over 3psi. So at 6psi, pull 3 degrees on 93 octane.

the thread was my attempt to figure out how necessary retarding my timing is running 6lbs of boost... i plan on getting to it soon, just wondering if i did it in 3-4 months if that would be such a bad thing going w/out it for awhile...

I would suggest it, atleast a couple of degress especially if you are running 91 octane. You should setup your timing also with a retard wall for anything above 6psi, say 10 degrees, incase you get a boost spike. Several guys have broken stuff at the hp, tq, and psi you are running.

I have the Procharger and mine was done via an ECU reflash. I am running 9 psi and I have 5 degrees of timing pulled.
