Default Vortech R4 program necessary?

For someone looking to use a vortech kit, but not upgrade the boost, and being in so cali, is the R4 program necessary? Or is the programming out of the box ok?
is the R4 program something available from vortech?

I got 70 extra ponies out of the software. For the coin you spend on the kit I'd use the software. The program comes rich so R4 helps out your a/f.

It's a decently safe tune out of the box (at least mine was). So if you're just interested in having boost, but not using it's full potential it's not necessary, however, it's $50 and WELL worth it to pick up extra power.

The SS box and R4 tuning ability is the main reason I am leaning toward the Vortech. The software must be purchased from Split Second as Vortech does not want you messing with the SS box.
