Default More broken stock rods (PICS)

We did the autopsy on another stock blown motor with a GReddy TT kit (not installed or tuned by Z1 Motorsports). It appears that the rod bolt(s) snapped on #4. Also, 4 out of 6 pistons had broken or cracked ring lands.

Here you can actually see the severed rod bolt on the left side

Carrillo's anyone ;-)

woah....absolutely mangled.

Ya know...that crazy thing is that with bad tuning, even forged pistons and rods can become just as mangled. No material can withstand sustained detonation for an extended period of time.

Absulutely true. Lower compression does give you a much greater margin for error though. One problem with even the best tune is that a bad tank of pump gas will potentially cause detonation.

Also, low Si forged pistons will tend to melt a bit instead of breaking. A melted ringland will often show iteslf by producing excessive smoke and low compression when tested. This is obviously a much better scenario than a completely exploded motor.

How difficult is it to replace rods and pistons? Can it be be done without removing the engine? From below maybe?

I was kind of curious about this as well. But i do know that you have to take everything out the top, just unbolt the rods from the crankshaft from below while on jackstands. Although I did hear that taking out the motor is not as hard as it may seem because the whole front brace can be taken off, so you can just hoist the engine and pull it out the front rather than top. Any verification would be great...

Hopefully no block damage accompanied this... Seems likely though.

Nope, it cant be removed from the bottom or top. Engine removal is required.

The big end of that rod looks like it was made of taffy.

Ive heard several different stories about how mcu boost he was running and how long the kit had been installed so I don't want to speculate on the truth.
