Where does the extra 18hp in the new G35 coupe come from?
Is it the air intake? And can we retrofit the parts on our cars?

They added variable exhaust valve timing, not in the previous models, and I suspect a slighly different cam profile too. I don't think the intake system changed at all. I would be interested to see if they updated the plenum though.

Incidentally, I don't think the exhaust valve timing is something that can be retrofitted since it would require the updated ECU software to control that. Would probably be cheaper to trade in your car for a newer model, unless you were feeling particularly experimental.

just go FI and you'll get more than the 18hp difference.

I heard that they put two "powered-by-Honda" stickers on each header.

Probably a slightly more aggressive cam and re-mapped fuel map would be my guess.

I personally thing that hp was always there. Japanese car companies used to have a gentlemen's agreement on peak hp being 280hp - they have since dropped it and are now being honest....

I think the cam design is a lil different. On my last car I had custom cams in it and the G has the same high end acceleration characteristic that my other car had. Plus the somewhat low torque number suggests diff cams.

Well, that would explain the drop in the torque then. (I love Hondas, there are/were 3 in my family. I also have/had 3 Nissans in the family as well)

Not quite

Bigger cams -- they lost a little low end and gained a little top end

Which is fine and will allow for more gains from the normal bolt-ons vs older models

Its actually the same motor in the 35th An Z which is rated at 300hp so the 13 or so hp increase over the previous motor is probably a set of cams and ecu mapping

I hope with the increased rev limit they upgraded the rods so people can push more boost safely.....its doubtful but we can hope

If you are talking about the new higher hp motor, it's variable timing, just like on the new 350z 300hp motor. everything should be the same, eccept for the intake again, on the g35 would be different than the z.
