Big tranny issue!!!
Ok, my 6th gear was totally crapped out, (grinding badly) so i took it to the dealership for them to take a look at it. They did acknowledge the tranny is totally fried, BUT they said i'll need clutch work with it as well. I'm like, ok can't be more than 400 bucks, but they give me a bill of 1500 dollars!! They said the clutch, flywheel, bearings pressure plate, all need to be replaced and they are NOT under warranty because they are wear and tear items. I can understand the clutch being a wear and tear item, but why does the flywheel need to be replaced? That part costs 1100 dollars! I think i drag raced the car ONCE since i owned the car and that can't possibly be the reason why.

is it possible that the poor tranny may have caused excess wear and tear on the flywheel and clutch? if so you could probably argue that it is the result of a faulty tranny causing faster wear on those items and have them covered. i would try and argue that if it all possible.

Even if it did cause that much wear, why would the clutch repair cost so much if the trans is gonna be out of the car in the 1st place.
Is that the cost of parts? Or is that labor? If parts, shop around, if labor, they shouldn't make you pay if THEY gotta remove it anyway.
But like ArlingtonZ said, argue the fact that the trans is deadlined caused excessive wear.

well if they aren't charging you for labor and you really do need a new flywheel clutch, time to upgrade and get the tilton combo
In all seriousness, if this dealer is giving you such a hard time, maybe you should call another dealer if there is one around and see what they can do. Also complain to the Nissan national service board about bad service. Doubt it will really do anything, but ya never know. Also what dealership is this so people know to stay away.

does anyone know if the flywheel is considered a wear and tear item? I find it absolutely ridiculous that it needs to be replaced!!!
I don't mind shelling out 400-500 for a new clutch, but paying 1100 for a flywheel is absolutely insane!!

themyst - Sorry to hear about that, I do think it's ironic how you used to harp about how much better quality the G was than the Z. Anyway, your dealer should do the whole job on Infiniti's dime...they are taking you for a ride. Take it somewhere else. Even the awful Nissan dealers have been replacing clutch + tranny for customers with tranny issues..and as you know we all have the same tranny.

OK.......this is total BS.
These are power train items and unless you put an UNGODLY amount of miles on your car, or seriously abused it, you should still be well within your warranty period.
Look in your Infiniti Warranty Information Booklet for the powertrain coverage, then give your dealer a swift kick in the ***.

Gzire - exactly what i did. I made the point that the flywheel is NOT a wear and tear item and that it should be covered under warranty. They will call me back tomorrow. In the meanwhile, i'll use that 1100 bucks i saved on an overdue brake job.

they showed me why the flywheel needed to be replaced. that thing was missing teeth! either way, the car now drives like a dream, not herky jerky like it did before. I have regained my love for the G! They gave me the latest revision tranny and i must say, its SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH. Not notchy and uneven like my old one. The clutch action on the G feels similar to an S2000 i drove. I love it!
