Default INFINITI GT-Errrr

Here we were, oh brothers, a friend of mine (has a G35) and Your Humble Narrator heavy into our cups and talking about our projects. In a Gray Goose induced stupor we have "stumbled", (like many before us, I'm sure), on a half-baked idea about using parts of the G35x to convert the G35 coupe to AWD...

Now YHN is hungover and is nagged by this idea. So here is the logical thoughts.

The G35x has been around for a while. There are many tuners who have at least as much imagination like myself, but also technical expertise to back it up. So this should spawn a whole fleet of AWD G-coupes, I however, never heard of anyone undertaking this... There probably is a reason for it.

Even if you go with 5AT, like in G35x, can it still be done? And why not just bite the bullet, take 2 extra doors and turbocharge the G35x? And what kind of AWD system does the G35x use, and what can be done to it?

If this already has been discussed, please direct me where, b/c so far I could not find anything. Unless this topic is taboo b/c everyone is sick of it and out moderators are deleting the posts? (just kidding)

Smilies are fun...

What's a G35x? Do you mean FX35? But this is interesting because i think it would be an ultimate thing to do to a high powered 350Z, FI or otherwise.

tZ, the G35x is the AWD version of the G35 sedan. Comes only as a 5AT, though...
And I have no clue if it's an all time AWD, which differentials is it using and if these parts can be compatible with the coupe's (nevermind the Z) geometry...

I am never drinking with car nuts again, ever...

Question

I'm not understanding why you would want to make the G35c awd to start with. All it is going to do is make a heavy car heavier and slower. You might save a little on the 60' time but it's going to slow you down the whole way down the track. It's going to take away from you top end as well. I have awd and sometimes I wish it was just rwd.

I live in Toronto were occasionally we get some crazy snow storms and I have a G35X. The G35X uses the Atessa Ets AWD system like the FX which is derived from Skyline GTRs. It is a variable AWD system starts at 25:75 front to rear split then at about 20mph it is 100% rear wheel drive. As slip occurs the split varies up to 50:50. The G35X also has a snow mode that you can force it to 50:50 mode until about 40mph for starting in slippery conditions. There is an approx 300lb weight increase with this AWD system.

Any one want to help me out with a forced induction fund? I'll let you know how the AWD system holds up

Does anyone know how well these drivetrains can hold up to boost?
I think the auto is really only capable at holding <450hp.
So is there a weaker link in the system?

A G35X coupe EH???
You'd need to mod it up fairly heavily to compensate for the added weight of the AWD, and for the power transfer losses...
I'd love to see it done!!!

Actually, I am interested in the sedan and modifing that.
I am just wondering were the week link will be as far as HP.

I have been reading this thread, wich seems that the trans is pretty stout with the right upgrades. https://my350z.com/forum/forced-induction/161445-b-at5-transmission-will-not-hold-400-hp.html

Maybe I will start a new thread.

Seems like this popped up a little bit ago.... transferring parts from the front AWD G35x to a regular G35 (sedan or coupe)... can't find it. The thought has definitely crossed my mind.

And as for the person questioning the need for AWD - you don't on stock power levels in the dry... but go FI with over 500 whp, and it would be nice.

The Attessa AWD system is bad-***.... and electronically controlled, so I bet it can be tuned for torque bias F/R. It adds about 180 pounds of weight, not 300.

My thoughts would be:
  • Probably pretty easy with a 5AT since the ECU already exists.
  • I would prefer a 6MT... how to add the AWD ecu to a 6MT car?
  • Also, mating the center diff to the 6MT tranny.
  • On top of FI kit, it would add even more weight to the front of the car. (300 total for both)

Except for the F/R weight balance changing, a 500+ whp G35 with AWD sounds really nice.

as others said, the system in the g35x is attesa et-s. bigwilly's on the money in his explanation. i did some research - i have the ESM for the 04.5Gc, 05Gc, 05GS, and 05Gx. When i was toying with the idea it looked like the transfer case would not bolt straight up- it appeared like it might work but you'd definitely need an adapter on the transmission or xfer case. and on top of that, you'd have to get the attesa ecu to talk to the car's ecu. with a manual transmission im not sure if that would work- im not sure if the attesa ecu would get what it needs. Also, im not sure if there's the sapce under the car for the xfer case...in the end i think this mod is possible, but would be very expensive- i could only guess that it would cost $10k+ .. so by the time you did the research (a year) and got the car, you may as well get a real 07 GTR and be done.

^ +1 I also herd that it uses electromagnetic center diff to transfer the power. So in case of boost that setup might freak out.

It does use a electromagnetic center diff, in terms of handling power. Consider that it is also used in the FX45 putting down 329 lb/ft torque, and interms of boost I refer you to the GTRs.
