Default Grinding downshifting to first, is it normal?

My 2004 G35C has 5K miles and has always been difficult to downshift into first while rolling. Grinds and refuses most times unless almost at a complete stop. If I double clutch I can smoothly shift while rolling, otherwise I must come to a complete stop. Never seen this on any of my other cars (all manual tranny's).

Thanks for any feedback...

Why would you need to downshift to 1st. Ive done that probably a handful of times but this is also my 1st manual transmission. I only use 1st to get going from a stop other than that im never in that gear. I have tried to go into 1st when rolling slowly and it is difficult so I just avoid it unless im stopped.

Why would you want to shift down to first?
Considering these cars can launch ok from 2nd gear.

I never go down to first unless I'm in a complete stop or parking lot crawl. It's waaay too short of a gear.

(ah you beat me to it barthelb )

Anyhow I'm just curious: What did you drive previously Wreckless? What was the gearing? mostly 5mt's???

Omg, rofl......I only "downshift" at about 2 miles an hour, most of the time I just feather the clutch in second, no reason to go to first....

1st gear is pretty tall....i dont know why you would down shift to it approaching a corner.......i have gone from 2nd to 1st but in s l o w traffic rolling. if you are over 10 mph there is no reason 2nd isn't the better gear. i bet even the hair pin @ monte carlo could be pulled off in 2nd......slowest corner in F1

No syncros on first...that's why rev matching/double-clutching helps out.

Ok, I only downshift to first gear when approaching a full stop. I'd never downshift to first while under power. My other car is an 2002 RT/10 Viper. My old trade in was a 2003 SRT/4. Before that were two ACR Neons. All manuals and all didn't have this quirk. Before the Neons I had Dodge Conquest TSI, Dodge Omni GLH Turbo, AMC SX/4,1969 SixPack Super Bee, 1970 SixPack Challenger R/T, 1969 383 Super Bee, and a 1974 360 Roadrunner...all were manual tranny cars. Like I said, other than classic cars I haven't seen a modern nonsynchroed 1st gear car. Live and learn.

Only time I ever downshifted into 1st was when I auto-x. Like hitting chicago boxes and pivot points. 1st gear would grind here and there, but I assume that is normal if you don't rev match.

this is exactly true, you need to rev match if you down shift into first, I do it all of the time with no problems.

+ 1 billion 3mph or less. otherwise it wont shift. i think the tranny is protecting itself from synchro wear. plus 2nd gear is the lowest you'd need to go if you were racing anyways....which is when you;d really need to downshift quickly
