I was thinking about trading my Envoy in on a used G35 I found locally, but was wondering how terrible the gas mileage is in real driving. I can't decide if I should get an 05 G35 with 27k miles for 18k or a 2007 Altima with 25k miles for 18k
Thanks!
Thanks!
If the car was going to be used strictly as a throw around car with a lot of cargo capacity I would get neither. I'd buy a 95-99 Maxima GXE or SE 5 speed. I used to have a 97 and it was an overachiever of a car. "Made on a Wednesday." Nothing a G35 sedan or coupe could attain. It got no less than 25mpg on around town commuting which translated to 425mi before the gas light even came on. The best tank I got was about 29mpg hwy driving to Boston. I got mine to run the 1/4mi in 14.05 @98mph with minimal breathing mods/ecu and had no problem strapping surfboards, carrying full suitcases along with 5 people in the vehicle and it could top out at over 140mph if it needed to. Well, I'm rambling because I do miss mine. They can be had for very cheap and these VQ motors will last! They don't burn oil!

I have no experience with the G's (ex 350z owner) but I do currently own a 2002 nissan altima 3.5 manual. And its a very practical car, which is why I traded the z in for it. My personal best was 44mpg (cruising at 50mph for about 150 miles on country roads) and my worst is like 19mpg. Honestly, there are times when I wish the handling was better, or that it was RWD, but for what it does its great. And the newer gens are slightly smaller, which is great for parking and have even better interiors and standard options.I really love long cruises on the highway because it has great power and is very smooth.
Now my next car will be a g37 sedan hopefully. Either way, both are good cars.

I am convinced that nothing made after 2000 can perform like my 4th gen 5sp maxima did. I never really learned to drive "economically" until I got my gas guzzling G35 coupe. In my Maxima I could hammer through around town traffic and STILL get >425 miles per tank. I HATE following slower cars! That's ~25mpg not driving like grandma and just short of 30mpg driving ~80mph on long highway trips! One time I miss-shifted twice running down the 1/4mi at Atco and I STILL got 14.5 seconds. My best time was 14.05. That means the car can be driven fast very easily. I think the engineers got it perfect for that generation. It takes everything I've got to even pull 20-21mpg out of my 6sp G coupe doing that same around town commute painfully slow lol. Throw around car definately goes to the 4th gen 5sp Maxima hands down. C'mon now lol. Let's be realistic...
IMO RWD and beats FWD everytime. And vs the Maxima recommended above, as a decenting opinion (I won't visit this thead again) I had a I35 as a loaner once which is build on the same platform, night and day worse then the G35, thought it was laughable that Infiniti was so desperate to fill a product gap that they even used the platform. Having a beam axle rear suspension vs the G35 independent rear wasn't a plus. IMO of course.
Oh here's my MPG average (since new I've pretty much calculated every single tankfull)
City 15-17
Highway 23-27
Drive both and get what pleases you. Both cars (if the altima is a V6) are of simular weight so it's a draw on fuel.

With my old 4th gen 5sp max, I must say that with an added rear sway bar, eibach prokits and AGX shocks, the handling tightened dramatically to the point that driving it felt fun and confident! Still not nearly as precise as today's newer cars, but it was light for a sedan of it's size. I even did 180 spin turns with the Ebrake with cars parked on both sides of the street! Try that with any car made after 2000 lol. The G won't be running away from a lightly modded max around town. Simply stated, the G cannot provide what the 4th gen maxima gives (all around bang for the buck with economy!) and of course any maxima doesn't have the seductive looks, build and the precise handling of a G35. I wish the G35 easily averaged 24mpg and ran mid 13's then I wouldn't miss the maxima anymore lol. 100+hp (298 vs 190) just isn't enough to offset a 500lb weight difference...bigger is not necessarily better.
