Default Benefit of CAMS on a FI > Vortech V3 SC

Wassup Guy's:

I want to purchase some cams but I don't know what is the benefit of them installed alone. My G35 is FI with a Vortech V3 SC. So would my car benefit from CAMS installation alone>?

You will probably get more info in the FI section.

OEM cams are very good so the cost of them may severly out weigh the gains, cams are a huge PITA to install with the engine in the car.

I have Crower stage 2 cams with a Vortech, and I think they are worth it. You could get more power from changing the pulley, but cams allow you to make the same power at a lower psi, increasing efficiency, reliability, etc. A lot of people don't do it because 1, they are expensive, and 2 like I said, you can just change the pulley to make the same power. The goal of my car was decent power and longevity, instead of max power and looking at a future rebuild.

Thanks for chiming in everyone! Chris, I'm currently running 10psi (3.12 pulley) with my Vortech V3 setup on stock block (G35X), putting down 370 WHP at the wheels, however I tempted to increase the boost with the 2.87 Pulley's. My question to you then, is do you think it is safe to install the 2.87 on my stock block. I'm not trying to see 400WHP, but my goal is to spank the M3. Feel free to inject your suggestion folks. Thanks again.

2.87 pulley should be fine with a good tune, because its torque that snaps rods, not horsepower. 450 supercharged horsepower is "safer" than 370 turbocharged horsepower, if you want to think of it that way. The Vortech will never make the torque that a turbo does, just due to how it works. You can make that power through efficiency without increasing boost though. Mine is making 392whp 333wtq with the 3.33 pulley on an extremely conservative street tune for daily driving. It originally made over 400, but had the tuner back it off a bit. M3's are not a problem.

Black350Z! and Chris, I'm definitely going to take your advice. However, Alex & Andrew (Inept Tuner) from "Performance Motorsport" >>http://www.theexperience.com/index.php<< have been steering me away from taking it to the next pulley size (2.87), they told me that it will blow up my engine. So I've held back from pulling the trigger on the 2.87, mean while I've been sort seeking insight's from people who are knowledgeable about FI. In all though, Thank you guy's.

I'm going to proceed with upgrading my pulley size and have Vince (Good tuner) from R/T tuning perform the tune for me.

I use to run a 2.87 pulley with a built v2 blower. It was running around 14psi at the top end. Car ran good for about 5k miles before i went turbo. I think with a good tuner you shouldn't have any issues running higher boost.

As far as your original question. It depends on what you feel is the best hp for the $. If you get cams we will say $1,000 plus if you have a show install them its around 11 hrs install time. so your looking $1500 plus for roughly 20-30hp gain. You just have to ask your self if its worth it.

Saying it will blow your engine is like telling somebody that they will get in an accident if they drive in a city. Is it more likely to happen? Yes. But most people are okay, and you don't go into it thinking its going to happen if you are well prepared (supporting mods, good tune, etc). There are many members in the FI section on here who are running a 2.87 pulley for a long time on a stock motor and have had no issues. Vince is the one who tuned my car, he is the best.

^ He is absolutely right, which is why not a lot of people add cams to their setup. You an add 30hp with the cost of a pulley and a tune, or get the same amount from cams and a tune for a lot more.
