test pipes disadvantage?
Talked to a guy at the local strip about test pipes. He's been dragging for about 40 years now. I asked him if he could pop in the test pipes for me. He told me to go hi-flow cats instead bc my check engine light will go off. I told him about the HELP method, which he already knew about of course and said it'll work but eventually, the engine could shutdown. Is there any truth to this? Haven't heard anyone talk about this on the forums. If thats the case I've got a set of labree resonated test pipes for sale . Thanks

i have had my test pipes since august 2004 with about 5k miles on them since then and i have never had a cel as a result of them. could be because i have a pre 04.5 ecu? only disadvantage i can think of is my friends tell me it smells when they are driving behind me. oh well - i don't have to smell it (though i do feel bad about screwing the environment)

that smell though...
my friend has test pipes, and holy crap it smells even inside the car. in CA, if a copper pulls you over ever and your engine is on, ur definitly getting a ticket for it.

That's BS. No issues with the engine shutting down. I run all 3 cars of mine catless (two on purpose, meaning the cats were replaced with test pipes- one because the oem cat burnt up after 6 yrs and I'm not replacing it).
The only issue is a potential SES light, which is easily corrected and a slight odor, which if your car is running good, not to rich or lean, shouldn't be too bad.

I have been driving around with test pipes for 1 year and 18K miles. I have a 2004.5 and no problems. I did have the cel light on for almost the whole year until I went FI and they it turned off for some reason Anyway, one day I was going like 145mph and the cel turned back on.....reset the ecu and no cel light.
