Default Is Nismo exhaust street legal?

I have Nismo exhaust on my car, I just got a ticket in the weekend for having aftermarket exhaust on my Z. I thought that Nismo exhaust is suppose to be street legal, since it is an upgrade from nissan dealer. So i went to the dealer and ask about it, and try to get some doc so i can go to court. However, the parts man in the dealer told me Nismo exhaust is only for off road use. Anyone have any idea?

I thought that only the intake was for offroad use and that the exhaust was 50 state street legal. It only gives you 5 HP more anyway.

geez every 2nd civic I see has an aftermarket exaust, guess the cop needed to meet his quota this month.

Oh btw the R-Tune nismo products are offroad use only and the S-Ture are legal i believe. I am reading this on the nissan canada site.

And i just dun understand how can the nismo be illegal, when it is an upgrade from nissan... the parts man told me, they dun even sell nismo parts in Canada. however, they do have nismo parts listed on nissan.ca ...

R-tune NISMO parts are for off-road use only. S-tune, like the NISMO exhaust, are 50 state legal. It's a grey area as to whether it's aftermarket or not. I'd fight it in court.

I wouldn't even call it an "upgrade". It's a dealer installed, factory approved, optional component. Hell, now you can even configure NISMO parts from the Nissan.com site.

I would do a little research on the law in your region, it may have a flat out rule against any modifications to the exhaust regardless of sound or emissions. I imagine the statute that he busted you on is written on the ticket, try looking that up and see if it applies.

You should have taken him to the back of the car and told him "see that NISMO on the exhaust tip? Know what that stands for? NISsan MOtorsport. How can that be an aftermarket exhaust???"

I can't imagine a cop thinking the Nismo is too loud. The only time its even "mildly" loud is at WOT. Were you aggressivley accelerating? Maybe he couldn't radar you so he gave you this bogus ticket instead.

I would fight it. Show it was installed by the Nissan dealer or maybe call Nissan Canada and ask for the street legal documentation. They do sell NISMO in Canada. In Ontario you can get it at almost any dealer.

Default Absolutely fight it.....

It is a factory option, just like an upgraded radio, 18" wheels, etc. obviously, the officer didn't know this. That's one advantage of Nismo, it is a factory option from Nissan, so S-tune IS legal. Even the R-tune parts can get by since most of these are not visible anyway. I just had my car inspected in Massachusetts which now also has ridiculous laws about aftermarket parts, including exhausts, and "vehicle ride height". No issues with the Nismo exhaust. Nissan factory option.

Not really. The NISMO is polished stainless whereas the stock muffler is black. The NISMO tips are larger and angle cut so they appear to be oval.

I had my Z up on the rack last Saturday and the NISMO drew a crowd. It's hard not to notice from behind.

I didn't realize Canada was one of the 50 states now so that doesn't apply. Find the citation number or read up on your Canadian laws to determine what is legal and what isn't. In the US legality is normally decided by the amount of decibels the exhaust produces under certain conditions. In other states any modified exhaust is illegal regardless of anything. The "50 state legal" probably has to do solely with emissions legality.
