Default Make your own CAI!

I was searching websites with AEM info, and came across this one:

http://www.teamdelsol.com/howto/coldair/diycoldair.htm

It looks very interesting, and I think it will be a pretty nice weekend project for our Z. Anyone up to it?

well, you might be able to, but you would obviously have to addapt it for the Z. also Im not sure steels is a good idea, as it can rust. now stainless steel is better, but still, it can rust.

that harder problems would be the bend coming out from the intake manifold, not quite 180. then you bend down, that is a 90bend, but then the red hose does a little S bend thing. dont know how you would mimic that..

Woke up this morning, did some measurement of stock intake pipe, but decided not to do the project now... I think the stock airbox has MUCH better design then I thought. I will keep my K&N for awhile..

I know it's for mustangs but if you call John DeMolet he might be able to make one for the 350z.
one problem with the PVC piping is that youll get a no sound out of it, all insulated, the gutteral sound of an intake comes from the metal tube.

I've read that pvc breaks down at high temps and gives of harmful gasses. Not sure if its an old wive's tale though.

if it is true, it might also require higher temps than youd find in an engine bay. but again, Im not sure either. havent ever heard that, but then again, havent used of pvc piping being used for anything hot. I think even hot water goes through copper piping in my house.

Under no circumstance use PVC, it'll break apart in high temp. Instead, the BEST material to use is aluminum, light, and the worst heat conductor, even better, wrap it with thermal material = true cold air.

one of these days some of the CAI development companies will get smart and start using extruded aluminum piping with twin walls... sorta like those insulated house windows. two layers of aluminum combined with a small air chamber would insulate the intake air VERY nicely! just might get actual OAT coming into the engine.

I think it's been covered, but here are two main things..

1. It has duct/opening to the front of the car, away from engine and most heat sources.

2. It is made of abs plastic, which doesn't absorb heats like metal type of piping..

yeah.... my brain eats, drinks, sleeps aviation...

seriously though... a 10 degree drop in intake temp makes a difference... a double walled intake tube could effectively take another 10 degrees or more off the intake temp.
