Unhappy Problem with AEM Intake :(

I just finished installing the AEM intake and I'm having a problem with the dang car dying... It's rather sad and I'm a bit scared that I did something wrong. I checked all the directions and stuff but here's the deal...

I start the car up... it goes for a second or two and then it just dies... it's almost as through the car doesn't get any air or something but I check everything and the connections seem to be okay. Any advice??

FYI: I didn't unplug the battery terminal while I was working on the car. I just did this and the car is sitting right now...

Make sure your MAF sensor is facing the air, meaning the resistor (sensor) is facing the front of the car, not back. It's probably not sensing any air flow and cut off the engine.

I had this problem when I was making custom intake, and installed the sensor backward...

I am almost 99% sure this is the problem... keep us posted!

Well I didn't unplug the negative of the battery either when I installed my Injen but I didn't disconnect the MAF sensor either so if you didn't disconnect the MAF that shouldn't make a difference. Do you have an engine check light come on? Did you come into contact with the MAF? You might want to remove the MAF and check to see if it is clogged up with oil in case your filter was too oily.

YIKES did anyone run into something like this with the Injen. How about any other AEM installs?

I am glad you were able to fix the problem. The directions are quite clear on which direction the tube should face when you are assembling the AEM intake. I almost made the same mistake when I put mine in. I don't know about you, but there is definitely a throatier growl with the car. Under heavy acceleration you can actually hear the air being sucked in by the intake, kind of cool.

I give the AEM a big thumbs up. I can definitely hear it coming in when you roll down the window - suckin' away hehe.

It has a great roar after 4000 RPM and more peep in the step. Gas prices are a ***** right now - I hate steppin' on the throttle but the sound is addicting!

RIMS, Exhaust, and then TEIN I think will be my next.

Default Speaking of gas prices...

One of the side benefits I have found with putting on the AEM is that my MPG has gone up by 4MPG. I used to average 16.5, mostly city driving. Now, I am up to almost 20.5.

All,

Is the installation for the AEM intake something that a person who is not a pro at car mod's undertake...or is this something that should be done by a professional mechanic?

Thanks!

I am no pro mechanic, and I was able to do it. Took me about 2 hours start to finish. Basic tools are all that is needed.

Remember, if you show the engine compartment any fear on your face, it will eat you alive. Just roll up your sleeves and pretend like you are muff diving.

ZunZet350z,

Thanks for the response. If it is like Muff diving, I will definitely like it!

Also, do you have recommendation of where to purchase the AEM Intake? Also, I am interested in mod'ing the exhaust. Can you give me some guideness on this? I see that you have B&B...can you guide me on what I would need, cost of purchase/installation, and your results.

Thanks!

Go to AEMpower.com. There is a phone number in the 310 area code that gets you in contact with them. You can only get it through an authorized dealer in your area. Ask AEM who the dealer is for your area. Call that dealer and verify. Go there in person and place order. If there is no backorder problem (there was not with me), you should get it in 4-5 business days. About $275 including tax and shipping out the door.

For the exhaust you can get it from Yuichi at StrictlyZ.com. Go to this website and you can order it online. About $900. You need a pro mechanic to install this one. Find an exhaust shop or a local mechanic that will do it for you. Heck, a couple of Nissan service depts. in our area have done them, that is probably the most expensive way to go. Exhaust note is fabulous!

My whole set up with the CAI, headers and exhaust make for one hell of a sound. When I pull into the service dept. at my Nissan dealer, everyone says to me that does not sound like all the other Z's that come in here. He, he, he, of course not!

Hope this helps.

I prototyped the system. Their shop is in the Phoenix area and they wanted a Z to develop and test the system. I offered them the use of my car, the benefit to me is I got to keep the new system.

mschwartz26,

Hope I'm not too late, but there is a group buy going for the AEM intakes. It's $225 shipped We need a 5th buyer in order to get this deal and you would be the 5th. Let me or Black GT-S know if you or anyone else is interested.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Unfortunately, I have already ordered and it is on it's way...maybe next time? Let me know if the future if you need additional people to get group rates on any products (mschwartz26@homtail.com). I am just starting on all the Mod's!
