noobie y,x,h pipe question
why do you need y,x or h pipe. what does it do and do you really need it. can some of you guys explain what it does?
thanks

The letters that you mentioned are different pipes for different exhaust configurations. The best way to learn about exhaust is to look under the car. Or you can search for members who have posted photos of their exhaust. The most simple exhaust is the one above. The V-motor has two sides with pipes running from each. Separate pipes and resonators and mufflers: No y, x or h pipe.
x and h pipes are basically used for the same purpose. On a true dual exhaust they equal out exhaust pressure on each side of the exhaust as the pulses are not timed exactly the same. This generally smooths out the sound, and creates a smoother torque curve. My personal belief is that an x-pipe is a much better choice as it will flow better, but an h is much cheaper. a Y pipe is what is used on the stock exhaust or on many stock v-motor exhausts to bring both banks together into one exhaust tube back.
X and H pipes are designed specifically for dual exhaust setups.
They are designed to not only balance the exhaust system, but they also allow for exhaust gas scavenging, by creating a vacuum, as one side balances the other, it pulls the unbalanced air to the other side, etc. - the X-pipe is the most effective for 6 bangers and the H-pipe is best for 8 bangers or high compression 6's. X-pipes have shown gains in the rough 4-6HP and 2-3TQ range by adding or converting to it.
Y pipes are for single piped systems. Aftermarket Y pipes greatly improve the exhaust flow from the usually restrictive versions on stock cars. They do this with less severe bends and usually with larger pipe diameters as well.
The picture on this thread show what are know as typical s-pipes - for dual setups - going dual all the way back.
