Default Possible that Nismo exhaust from original R tuned 350Z is different?

I met a guy at a car meet here in Holland with an US imported 350Z R tune.
He replaced his Nismo exhaust with the Borla exhaust. Reason: Nismo sounded too much like a Civic like exhaust, too 'sharp', maybe a bit of rasp even in the exhaust sound.
I thought that the Nismo exhaust would just increase the standard exhaust sound by making it louder/deeper, although keeping the unique stock sound.

Is there also a R-tune nismo exhaust or just the S-tune? And is it possibly the other mods made to his engine that gave it the sharp exhaust sound rather than the Nismo itself?

Tnx for any info, search didn't give any good results...

with test pipes (my old setup)
it sounds only like a civic around 2000-3000rpm...
then it is louder and sounds really good...
but if he is only in cruising speed (2000-3000rpm) all the time then its going to sound like a civic lol

Any cat back exhaust in combination with mods such as headers or high flow catalytic converters is going to sound different.

One member may like the sound. Another may not.

There is the S-Tune and the R-Tune Nismo Exhaust. The S-Tune stays under the Factory Warranty and the R-Tune doesn't. I have the Nismo Exhaust myself. Check with any Nissan Dealership in your area.

Okay, I just called the Nissan Dealership here and talked with the Parts Manager. I stand corrected: The headers are R and the Exhaust is S.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it's the combination of the S-tune exhaust along with all the R-tune parts he has on his Z.

I wish that NISMO would never have named their parts S and R-tune. It has created terrible confusion.

And they have a nice deep sound not a civic. I also agree on the S's and R's. should have just made it simple, just Nismo. And difinitely the shop knows them inside out also, as they (this one anyway) has them available in 24 hrs.

Are you sure he doesn't have test pipes? My car is raspy only in the 2k rpm zone after I installed test pipes. With Nismo Type R headers and the exhaust, it was just the stock but a bit louder.

Yeah, maybe he has some test pipes as I didn't expect either that the Nismo would sound a little rice (according to him).

I'm still leaning towards get the Nismo exhaust along with my Kinetix HFC's...

Maybe he had the titanium version? That has a bit more of a rattle/rasp to it than the stainless.
