Cold Air Intake for 2006 350Z
i am looking to buy a cold air intake for my 2006 350Z... there's a few on this site for sale by owners and some on ebay... I need help with the following questions:
1) Whether it's a Nismo, AEM, or INJEN, do all Cold Air Intake systems fit for all years for the 350? I have an 2006 enthusiast. Just wondering in case I buy a system from an older model year.
2) What's the difference between a SHORT RAM cold air intake system vs. a regular COLD AIR INTAKE system?
3) After installing the CAI System, was there a noticeable increase in power or was it so small that it was not aparently obvious after installation?

You want the Injen SP1986 cold air intake. This is the best because you can use it as a short ram (which is what I did) or use it as a true cold air intake...very versatile.
Contact Darren at Intense Powersports http://intensepower.com/ and tell him that Joe Seabrooke sent you from My350Z...ask him for the My350Z "Friend Price".
In answer to your questions:
1) Yes it will fit the 06 Enthusiast (and all models from 03 on)...this is the same car that I have.
2) The Short ram is just the metal tube (replaces the stock plastic tube) and the cotton air filter element (K&N Style) which elimenates the air filter box on our cars. The advantage to short ram is because there is less tubing in which air has to be "sucked" through to get to the motor. (demo...take two straws, cut one in half. Drink a beverage through both straws...one straw at a time silly. You will note that less effort is required to draw the fluid up through the shorter straw vs. the longer straw). Disadvantage...people claim that you are drawing in hot air into the intake (because of underhood temps)...but honestly, when the car is in forward motion, air is being pushed from the front grill area, into the engine bay, and down the back of the motor. So realistically, cool air is still being transmitted through the short ram system because of the location of the filter.
A true Cold Air Intake actually takes and routes the tubing from in front of the bumper where it draws in the outside air and plumbs it up to the intake manifold. So basically, the air filter element sits between the radiator and the front grill. The theory is that as vehicle speeds increase, a sort of poor mans forced induction is occuring...plus you are pulling in ambient air temperatures vs underhood temps. But...there are many people that argue that the kit in this set up losses power because the turbulance that is created in front of the filter does not allow for smooth intake of the air...in addition, your tube length has increased significantly (see straw example above)
The best set up IMHO is to just leave the Injen SP1986 as a Short Ram Style...people have posted power losses by doing the full CAI set up (Nismo Too)
3) I did not notice an obvious difference with the CAI...however, once I did the MREV2 and 5/16" spacer with the CAI...holy smokes! This combo really wakes up the 06 Z's. If you do not already have the MREV2 and 5/16" spacer, purchase these before the CAI. See this link because Darren also has these on sale:

Contact the seller and ask.
2) What's the difference between a SHORT RAM cold air intake system vs. a regular COLD AIR INTAKE system?
With respect been discussed 100 times.
3) After installing the CAI System, was there a noticeable increase in power or was it so small that it was not aparently obvious after installation?
The 350Z has about 240HP at the wheels. If an intake adds, say, 2.4HP, do you think you can feel a 1 percent increase?
