Default K&N: Series 63 vs Drop In

I know that intakes have discussed through and through. So sorry for this thread - I did do a lot of searching first. From my research on this and other websites, I decided I was going to stay away from the typical CAI because they all seem to have metal tubing, which gets hot, heats the air, and essentially has minimal impact.

So, I was going to stay stock and just drop in a K&N filter. Easy as 1-2-3 and most people seem pleased.

However, I have seen a few (actually just two) mentions of K&N Series 63 filter and intake system. This appears to eliminate any metal pieces, so may actually be a good combination of a CAI and a K&N drop in. Supposidely good for an extra 10 hp.

Drop in: ~$35
Series 63: ~$140

Anyone have opinions or guidance they would like to provide?

Also, would either of these warrant and ECU reset (no other breathing mods have been done or will be done soon).

Thanks

Kev

First mod i did was the K&N drop-in filter. After a while i put on a Popcharger but only to remove it a month later. Every now and then i get the urge to buy another intake like the Stillen cold-air-box but end up squashing the idea in a day or two (recovering impulse buyer).

If you wana save the money, get the drop-in filter.

If you want some extra noise or dress up the engine bay a little or lighten your wallet some, get the full intake.

Thanks, I am going to just go with the K&N drop in. Is this enough of a change that it warrants resetting the ECU?

i have the k and n typhoon. i've researched intakes to death...truthfully either won't make adifference as the intake flows pretty well...the real power n/a mods are the cams, plenum, headers, cats, and y-pipe.

I would honestly advise against K&N (or other oiled air filters). There are no true gain in power and your let more dirt into your engine.

I appreciate your input, but that is the first time (in a lot of research) that I have seen any comment along those lines.......hmmmmm.

K&N filters are great im sorry but, i show nothing but rav reviews from TV and just about every tech guy in the industry thats not even sponsered from them. There used to much by high end companies and have great rep. Its not fram its K&N . I bought one and it looks great. Much better then the paper garbage.

i have the 63 series. It's a VERY solid intake. The heat shield is metal but everyting else is thick plastic. I recommend it.

^^ sounds like you guys are trying to justify pi$$ing away $200+ on a mod that does almost absolutley nothing performance wise

If you have a 2006, get a standard drop in. 2007's don't have a drop in as of yet. 2005-2003, get some kind of short ram intake or get the 2006 intake w/ a drop in. Either way, you won't get much power.

it sounds badass and looks good. I'm just saying that for those of us who do spend the money for an intake the 63 series is top notch in my book

I just bought the K&N drop-in air filter tonight for my '06 - working great. A noticable improvement over my original w/ 13k miles on it.

LoL - there were dead leaves in my intake too..

i liked the 63 series K&N, it worked great, plastic tube like OEM so not much heat soak there, and theres a big metal heat shield box that actually prevents big items like leaves and such from entering the engine bay.

+1...i changed mine this past weekend also with only 13k miles and saw dead leaves in front of the air filter! i didn't think our intakes were that strong. i just added the k & n drop in this weekend and honestly i don't see that much of a difference from stock, but build and material wise, i think the k & n was built a whole lot better and stronger then the OEM filter.

Yeah, It didn't whip my head back or anything, but, there was a little improvement. I'm happy with it.

I recently pulled out my K&N Drop-in filter after about 25,000 miles of road use. I inspected the intake tube, throttle body and MAF and all seemed clean and free of the oily buildup that many people claim occurs with K&N filters.
