Some people tried this a long time ago. Sounded like crap, iirc. Lots of rasp.

It's not a great idea. Plus cold air touching hot O2 sensors = bad. There are reasons your exhaust extends to the rear of the car.

If you want something loud as f0ck you might consider getting straight pipes fabricated at an exhaust shop... should not be expensive at all.

I removed my resonator and had a piece of straight pipe installed before i got my Nismo. It actually sounded pretty good! A little rasp, but it loudened it up nicely, so it was worth it. Just don't let em toos it, if you don't like it, you can spend $10 and have 'em put it back in.

Bump... anyone have a reasonable estimate as to how much it would cost to have a new mid-pipe made? I have test pipes and a stock exhaust and I was interested in a little bit more noise while retaining the VQ sound. And of course, at a much lower price than buying a full exhaust! I'm also thinking of asking for someone's stock mid-pipe and having the resonator removed with a pipe welded in its place.

You still drive without it now?

I was asking about removing that pipe once too. Was wondering if the rasp increase and noise increase was similar to running test pipes?

I'm sure the OP was meaning to remove the midpipe and replace it with straight tubing, not remove it and leave a foot long gap in the exhaust LOL

I sure hope that's what he meant anyway.

**** now that's a good idea. I still have my stock exhaust. If the stock midpipe section is the same dimensions as the Nismo and bolts up cleanly, I will just remove the resonator from the old factory pipe, replace with straight tubing and bolt it onto the Nismo, instead of hacking up the Nismo pipe.

edit:

screw it I'm just gonna have them yank out the Nismo mid pipe and add the straight pipe next Sat. Will make sure I make it clear that it will need to go back if it sounds like crap though. Will let you know what I think it sounds like next Sat. The price is right whether it works out or not.

yea i still drive without the resonator, straight pipe in place. its loud. there is rasp, but for the moment, i don't mind. it is kinda deceiving how loud it is, because in the cabin it doesn't seem that bad. ive had coworkers tell me they can hear my car a good 500-700 ft away. gota be careful for the popos tho.

if you are just driving normal, its noticeably louder than just the nismo. if you WOT, its LOUD. if you are in a parking garage and floor it, you will scare people.

Ive never had test pipes..... hope this helps.

Thanks man. So to re-clarify, does it rasp only when the engine and exhaust are cold or does it always rasp?

Wonder if a tiny resonator would help with the rasp if it's too bad, yet still maintain the higher DB levels.

Think I'm still gonna give it a shot. At least I can swap it back if I hate it.

Instead of removing my resonator. I cut the end of the midpipe where the muffler is and had a Y-pipe welded on with stock tips at the end. Sounds pretty nice, but still rasps when cold.

I've had people tell me it's loud and it's not that loud. Very mixed... I think I have a youtube video somewhere...

edit: Excuse the comment at the end of the video
